CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP
By Craig Sager II

Carter Hall powers Wesleyan to Class AA title

Wesleyan closed out its sweep of Darlington in the Class AA state championship with an 11-5 Game 2 victory Monday. The host Wolves led 3-0 after the top of the 1st inning, but Darlington cut it to 3-1 with a solo home run by Jay Shadday.

Darlington scored on a bases loaded walk to cut it to 3-2, but slugger Carter Hall kept Wesleyan in front with

two solo home runs to grow a 5-2 edge. Darlington cut it to 5-3 in the fourth inning but once again, Hall came through and hit a 2-RBI double. Carter's younger brother Colin hit a two-run double to make it a 10-3 and Christian Stark drove home the Wolves' final run to make it 11-3. This is the Wolves' first state title since the program completed a three-peat in 2008-10.

Class AAAAA

Gainesville 6-3, Greenbrier 2-7: Gainesville's Jonathan Gettys pitched a complete game and struck out 11 batters while allowing just two hits in the Red Elephants' 6-2 Game 1 victory.  Gainesville built a 6-0 lead after a sloppy defensive game by host Greenbrier that included six errors. In the top of the 3rd, Gainesville's Fedrick Cardona and Mikey Gonzalez made it 2-0 after crossing the plate on a pair of errors and in the top of the 5th, Cardona added Gainesville's third unearned run before Gonzalez and Collier Scott crossed the plate to make it 5-0.  Gonzalez hit an RBI-single in the 5th inning for Gainesville's final run. Gainesville walked in a run in the bottom of the 6th and Garrett Marchman singled to drive home John Dennany.

In Game 2, the teams went scoreless until Marchman and Avery Smoak each drove in Greenbrier runs in the top of the 4th to build a 2-0 lead. In the 5th inning, Ty Snipes tripled to right field and drove in Dennany and Nick Sandlin hit a sac fly to bring home Snipes to make it 4-0. Dennany added a RBI single in the top of the 6th inning to give Greenbrier a 5-0 edge. Brandon Sewell got Gainesville on the board in the bottom of the 6th with an RBI single but Justin Hartfield and Dennany drove in two more Greenbrier runs in the top of the 7th to push the lead to 7-1. Gainesville had bases loaded in the final inning and added a pair of runs, but cutting the deficit to 7-3 came at the expense of a fielder's choice and a sac fly and pitcher Adam Sasser was able to force Anthony Carrera to pop out to right field for the final out.
