PRE-PLAYOFF FOOTBALL POLL
Preseason favorites return to 6A top 10
 

Class AAAAAA saw movement as three previously-ranked teams returned to the top 10 for the first time since September. Mill Creek re-entered the poll for the first time in nine weeks at No. 7 and

Tucker took over at No. 10 for the first time since Week 1. Archer, the preseason No. 1, finished its year with seven straight wins and returned to the poll at No. 9.

 

In Class AAAAA, Creekside jumped Harris County for No. 8 after topping Stephenson for a second time this season on Friday. In Class AAAA, Mary Persons dropped from No. 3 to No. 8.

 

Westside-Macon debuts in Class AAA and replaces Cook. Class AAA's, Hart County dropped to No. 9 after suffering its first loss of the season to Jefferson on Friday. In Class AA, Lamar County dropped from No. 6 to No. 9 and Macon County debuted at No. 7. Class A-Private Mount Pisgah and 

 

Class A-Public Dooly County each leapt from No. 8 to No. 5 in their respective polls. Undefeated Mount Paran edged unbeaten Aquinas for No. 1 in Class A-Private.

STATE PLAYOFFS
First round pairings set in Class AA-AAAAA
 
The playoff fields are just about set in Classes AA through AAAAAA and first round action will take over statewide on Friday. There are two more playoff spots yet to be filled in Class AAA and they will be determined tonight in a mini-playoff between Cedartown/Rockmart/Pepperell. 

In Class AAAAAA, Gwinnett County heavyweights will square off in the opening round and the three-way tie in Region 8 sets up some great first round clashes. Stay tuned all week for previews of the first round action and catch all of the results live on Friday as we set the Sweet 16 fields.

CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP

Marietta boys capture Class 6A title
 

Carrollton - Marietta High School took home the GHSA Class AAAAAA boys cross county state title on Saturday as their combinations of 5K's was the best and the team finished with the time of 1:25:03.36 followed by Brookwood (1:27:26.05) at the course at Carrollton High School. title was won by Lakeside-Dekalb's Davis Stockwell (16:33.77). The battle for first was intense as runner-up Mountain View's Tyler Barber crossed the finished line right behind Stockwell (16:33.85). On the girls' side, Northview's Lindsay Billings (18:29.73), who has been almost unbeatable all season, took home the individual state title and led the Titans (1:40:27.49) to the state championship over South Forsyth (1:41:26.48). Northview won the Class AAAAA title last year.

 

Class AAAAA: The Clarkston boys took home the boys title (1:26:20.14) followed by Flowery Branch (1:26:25.79). Kell's Logan Poteet (16:14.93) won the individual title. The girls' championship was won by Dunwoody (1:43:54.60) followed by Starr's Mill (1:44:57.80). Alyssa Hooker (19:45.70) of Lakeside Evans won the individual trophy.

 

Class AAAA:.The St. Pius boys (1:24:40.05) won the title, running by Marist (1:26:26.85). Marist had won the last two titles and nine of the last 12. Pius had won the last four championships at Class AAA. Woodward Academy Alex Murfee (16;20.24) took the individual trophy with a 5K personal best, which placed him in the MileSplit US First Team Elite. For the girls, Marist (1:37:37.50) is the state champion followed by St. Pius (1:46:45.10). Marist's Morgan Ilse (18:25.90) won the individual title. It was the seventh straight year the Marist girls have won it all.

 

Class AAA: Blessed Trinity and East Jackson finished tied with 60 points apiece but BT (1:27:51.27) was awarded the state title because their runners placed higher overall. East Jackson's Chase Kennedy (16:42.91) was the best in the individuals. For the girls, Westminster (1:42:18.55) won the championship over BT (1:46:00.46). Hart County's Audrey Honiotes (19:26.68) won the individual title. Westminster split the title last year at Class AA with Wesleyan.

 

Class AA: The Wesleyan boys (1:30:02.68) finished on top and Pace Academy (1:30:45.34) was second. Darlington's Spencer Fields (17:11.80) won the individual championship. Lovett (1:43:27.77) had an impressive performance for the girls, taking home the state title and Serena Tripodi (19:16.17) took home the individual title.

 

Class A-Public: Jenkins County (1:43:10.13) slipped by Towns County (1:43:09.72) to win the boys title. Irving Rendon (18:56.43) of Morris Innovative won the individual championship. The Towns County girls (2:03:51.24) won its third straight title, getting by Commerce (2:06:03.30). Also, Hannah Whitehead (21: 47.95) of Towns won the individual championship.

 

Class A-Private: Hebron Christian Academy (1:30:10.96) won the boys title over Providence Christian (1:33:12.20) and Galloway's Reilly Friedman (15:52.43) won the individual award. He was the only runner in 2014 state championship to break under 16 minutes. The Landmark Christian (1:43:17.60) girls won the championship, again leaving Providence Christian (1:46:52.41) as the runnerup.  After finishing fifth at the state meet last year, Fellowship Christian's Emma Grace Hurley won her first-ever state title (19:06:78).

Clinic: 6 - 8:15 p.m.  
This free clinic for children ages 6 - 14 will focus on teaching young athletes proper football tackling, as well as other football fundamentals and life skills. This is a non-contact, no equipment clinic. 

Parent Informational Session: 6:15 - 7:15 p.m. 
Session led by former Atlanta Falcons Linebacker Buddy Curry. Parents will learn about proper equipment fitting, concussion awareness and the heads up tackling technique. Light refreshments and beverages will be provided to parents in attendance.
