Gwinnett County logjammed entering Week 12

The Region 4-AAAAAA title will be at stake when McEachern and Hillgrove wrap up their regular seasons on Friday night. Hillgrove, which sits one game behind 5-0 McEachern at 4-1

in the region, has home-field advantage.

Colquitt County, the only undefeated team in the highest classification, secured the Region 1 championship by taking care of Tift County last week.

Tucker has clinched the Region 2 title, Alpharetta has sealed the deal in Region 6 and Westlake assured itself of the top seed out of Region 3 by defeating South Cobb last Saturday. Alpharetta will host Cherokee in the first round of the state playoffs. North Gwinnett will triumph in Region 7 if it beats Mountain View this week. Alpharetta's title means former offensive coordinator Jacob Nichols will likely be the lone first-year head coach to lift a region winner's trophy in Class AAAAAA this year.

There are four head-to-head showdowns for Class AAAAA region titles this week. Both Houston County and Northside-Warner Robins are 7-1 in the region and one game up on both Jones County and Warner Robins. That means the regular-season finale between Houston County which is playing at home and Northside-Warner Robins is for the No. 1 seed.

The other three contests with titles at stake are official championship games between sub-region winners. Drew is visiting Stockbridge in Region 4, Stephenson is making the trip to Creekside in Region 6 and Kell is hosting Dalton for the top spot in Region 7. Both Drew (over Mundy's Mill) and Stockbridge (over Dutchtown) won their respective sub-regions based on head-to-head tiebreakers. Creekside came out on top of a three-way tie in its sub-region with Carver-Atlanta and Mays by sporting a superior record against Class AAAAA competition.

Harris County, Ware County, Allatoona and Lanier have already locked up region titles. Lanier won its first-ever region title by beating Region 8 foe Winder-Barrow last week. The Longhorns got two rushing touchdowns from Tario Fuller and a game-clinching interception return for a touchdown by Jeremy Taylor.

Title-hopefuls set to battle in Carrollton

There could be a changing of the guard in the highest classification when the state cross country meet is held once again on the famed grounds of Carrollton Saturday. Brookwood's boys have captured titles four of the last five years and Mill Creek won it all in 2012, but both teams will be playing an underdog role against Marietta. The Blue Devils boast seven runners who have broken the 16:00 mark this season.

Northview's girls triumphed in Class AAAAA in 2013 and their jump to Class AAAAAA could spell bad news for other contenders like South Forsyth, Harrison and Etowah. Among the boys contenders in Class AAA are Region 4 rivals Blessed Trinity and Westminster. The Titans and Wildcats have already squared off at the same meet three times this season, with Blessed Trinity leading the proverbial head-to-head series 2-1. They most recently met at the region championship, where the visiting Titans beat the runner-up Wildcats.

A top-heavy East Jackson squad should also be in the mix. On the girls' side, too, Blessed Trinity and Westminster are the top two favorites. Like the two Class AAA powerhouses, Starrs Mill also has apparent sweep potential in Class AAAAA. The Panther boys recently dominated the Region 4 championship with four runners under the 17:00 mark. Starrs Mill's top five girls averaged 20:09 to beat McIntosh 31-49 in a potential preview of the state meet. As always, watch out for St. Pius X at Carrollton. Its boys are coming off four consecutive Class AAA titles and its girls prevailed in 2009 and 2012.

Now in Class AAAA, the Golden Lions are likely to be tested significantly by the North Hall, North Oconee and Woodward boys and by the Marist girls. Pace Academy's girls lifted the Class A-Private trophy in 2013, but this time around it could be the boys who achieve glory. They are ranked No. 1 in Class AA ahead of Wesleyan, Bleckley County and Lovett.
