SOCCER FINALS PREVIEW
By Stephen Black
Region 6 floods Class AA championships

CONTINUED FROM THURSDAY ...

St. Pius X has been the story in Class AAA for two solid years. Both the girls and boys teams are the defending

state champs. The boys, who are nine-time state champs, will take on Oconee County in the finals. The Warriors have not yet won a state title.

The lady Golden Lions have taken home seven crowns and will face region-rival Blessed Trinity in the finals. The Titans have won five state championships.

Westminster has won three straight championships but will have to take on GAC, which has been ranked No. 1 all season and is undefeated. The Spartans beat Westminster twice during the regular season by a combined score of 9-1. Westminster leads the state with 11 state crowns while GAC has won three.

GAC's girls squad is also in the final, having scored a whopping 35 goals in the playoffs. The Spartans face Lovett in the final, a team they split with in the regular season. The Lions won state championships in 2001 and 2005 while GAC took it home in 2012.

PARTY CRASHERS ...

First Presbyterian is a proud girls soccer program, having won state championships in 2011 and 2012. The Vikings edged Fellowship Christian 2-1 to make the finals yet again. They are the lone school in the Class A finals to not be from the city of Atlanta. Pace Academy, owner of state championships in 1995 and 1997, opposes First Presbyterian in the finals.

The boys' final consists of the defending state champion, Paideia, and Atlanta International School, a program that was ranked No. 1 for much of the season. In fact, the Pythons defeated AIS on April 23. Despite losing seven games this season, Paideia has rallied to win its last six to make the finals.

Lassiter held off a talented Chattahoochee team 14-12 to make the quarterfinals and played host to Area 2-rival Walton, which exploded to a 23-6 win over Mill Creek in the quarterfinals.

Walton's only in-state losses this year were to Lassiter (10-9) and Milton (18-18) entering the semifinals. Lassiter's only in-state loss was to Milton (14-10). Lassiter, Milton and Walton are 14-0 against Georgia teams outside of Area 2 this season. Walton and Lassiter battled in a rainy overtime thriller in the semifinals and the Raiders prevailed 13-12. Erin McBridge tied the game at 12-12 and Sophia Watkins netted the game-winner in the final minute.

In Class A-AAAAA, the Blessed Trinity girls scored a thrilling 13-12 victory over top-seeded McIntosh to advance to the semis. The Titans visited Kell on Tuesday, which beat Northview 18-12 in the quarterfinals. Kell survived Blessed Trinity with a 12-11 victory and advanced to the program's first state championship.

The second half of the semis featured Westminster and St. Pius X. Four-time defending state champion Westminster dominated St. Pius with a 19-9 win to return to the finals.

Westminster has lost one game to an in-state opponent all season and it was a 14-9 loss to the high-powered Longhorns. Kell's semifinals victory moved the school to a record 19 wins. Leslie Ferguson netted five of Kell's 12 goals in the semis and teammates Haley Swift and Izzy Palermo both tabbed hat-tricks. Swift led Kell in the first round with four goals and six assists and potent Kell is averaging 16.6 goals per game this season.
