BASEBALL RANKINGS

Lions debut while Raiders, Wolverines stumble

Peachtree Ridge finally broke through and made the Class AAAAAA top 10 after winning six straight games against quality competition. The Lions outscored Norcross, North Gwinnett and Mountain View 15-1 in three recent games. Walton fell out of the top five after losing three straight while West Forsyth dropped out entirely with five consecutive defeats.

Wildcats' overall body of work against in-state competition. Houston County tumbled out of the top five while Greenbrier and Gainesville rose up to Nos. 4 and 5, respectively.

Cross Creek made its first appearance in the Class AAAA rankings as Columbia, losers of three games in its past seven, fell out of the rankings.

In Class AAA, Ringgold and Cartersville each ascended into this week's top 10. Cartersville, the defending state champion, has won 11 of 12 while Ringgold has won 13 of 14 and is ranked for the first time this season.

Defending Class AA champion Lovett continued its free fall through the rankings after losing four of five games, including two to Westminster in a recent three-game series. The Lions are now ranked No. 8 after being No. 1 two weeks ago.

Hebron Christian (won 12 of 13) and George Walton Academy (nine straight wins) each vaulted into the Class A rankings with recent win streaks.

Centennial holds off Lassiter, Thursday slate packed with must-see action

The Centennial boys took a 9-4 lead into halftime on Wednesday but saw Lassiter tie it up at 9-9 with 2:30 remaining before netting the game winner. Centennial (11-3) is ranked No. 5 in Class AAAAAA visits No. 3 ranked Lambert on Saturday. ...Hillgrove and Northview were the only two undefeated boys teams in the state

heading into Wednesday, but Harrison changed with a 14-4 win over the Hawks. Harrison led 9-0 at the half before coasting after the intermission.

Thursday will feature some huge matchups leading into a busy weekend slate. Class A-AAAAA showcases Fellowship Christian at No. 9 Cambridge and No. 1 Northview at No. 4 GAC. In Class AAAAAA, 11-1 Grayson will be tested with a visit to No. 8 Peachtree Ridge on Thursday and No. 3 Lambert visits No. 10 John's Creek. The most significant cross-classification matchup is Lovett at Milton. Lovett flexed its muscles last week against a Class AAAAAA opponent with a lopsided 8-2 win over Lassiter. Milton is currently the No. 1 team in Class AAAAAA.

The girls game to watch is No. 1 Kell at No. 2 Westminster Thursday night. Kell suffered its first loss last week to Class AAAAAA No. 2 Lassiter 13-6, but followed it up with a solid 15-13 win over No. 7 Blessed Trinity on Monday. Westminster is 11-0 in its in-state games this season and can take over the top spot in Class A-AAAAA with the win. Saturday features a great Class AAAAAA matchup with No. 4 Mill Creek at No. 5 Chattahoochee. Mill Creek has outscored its last four opponents 70-11 since its 11-10 loss to undefeated Hutchison (Tenn.) on March 22. Chattahoochee holds a perfect 9-0 record against in-state opponents this season and scored consecutive one-goal wins over No. 6 Centennial (17-16) and North Gwinnett (10-9) before its 18-8 win over South Forsyth on Monday.

Spalding boys three-peat in Region 4

The Spalding boys won their third consecutive Region 4-AAAA title by beating Eagle's Landing 3-2. Andrew Winter won his No. 2 singles match and Barrett Lavender won at No. 3 singles. The No. 2 doubles team of Luke Barlow and Benjamin Parker also got a win. Griffin beat Dutchtown 4-1 to win the third place crown. The Bears were led by Randy Chastain who won his No.1 singles match. Griffin is making its first trip to the state playoffs since 2000.

If there are two teams to watch in DeKalb County, it would have to the Arabia Mountain boys and girls team. The boys finished the regular season with a 10-1 record while the girls finished with an 11-1 record.

The boys have been led by Norian Ross who has a 5-0 record in No. 1 singles. He also recorded a 5-1 record in No. 2 singles. Amir Daniel has also done well in singles play, posting a 7-1 overall record.

The girls have been led by Taylor Champion and she has a 9-0 overall record in singles play. The doubles team of Lauren Lewison and Karrisa Ash has been a formidable duo, posting a 3-0 overall doubles record.

In other boys' tennis news, Peter Bertran of North Oconee played in his first Davis Cup match last week and defeated Robert Farah of Columbia 2-6, 6-1, 6-4. Bertran is from the Dominican Republic but attends North Oconee High School. He has a 44-19 overall record on the International Tennis Federation Circuit. Last year, Bertran won tournaments in his home country as well as Aruba and Barbados. He is considered as one of the five best prospects in the state.
