GIRLS SOCCER RANKINGS

Parkview among defending champs on top

Defending champion Parkview boasts early-season wins over Class AAAAAA competition in Peachtree Ridge and Collins Hill to stay atop the rankings.

Northgate in Class AAAAA, Marist in Class AAAA and St. Pius X in Class AAA are the other 2013 champions still perched atop their respective classes.

McIntosh, also undefeated like Northgate, is making a real charge in Class AAAAA with a win

over Class AAAAAA top 10 team Lassiter. In Class AAAA, Columbus' tie against Woodward is its only mark outside the win column. As such, Columbus is applying pressure on Marist. St. Pius X and Blessed Trinity have done nothing to suggest that a rematch of their Class AAA state championship game is not in the cards.

Region rivals Lovett, Greater Atlanta Christian, Westminster and Wesleyan swept into the Class AA semifinals last year and once again have a monopoly on the top four spots. Calhoun, though, is looking to crash the party after beating Armuchee, which is ranked one spot below the Yellow Jackets at No. 6.

Class A so far is all about First Presbyterian Day. The Vikings already have wins over Veterans, the No. 3 team in Class AAAA, and St. Vincent's, the No. 7 team in Class AA.

New programs represented with state qualifiers

There are 63 schools participating in gymnastics this year including Ola, which

started the sport for the first time last year. The Mustangs competed in the first meet of the 2014 season this past Saturday at Rockdale Gymnastics and sophomore Sierra Mask and junior Haley Harp both qualified for state for floor exercises. A gymnast must score an 8.5 in an event during the season to qualify for state and Mask and Harp both came in at 8.5 in floor.

Luella, which also competed in the meet, won in total points with 90.4. In order for a team to qualify for state they must reach a total of 96 and that is the number everyone will be shooting for this season. Ola finished with 84.25 total points....Cambridge is another new program taking strides this season and scored a 2nd place finished at the Sequoyah meet on March 1. The Bears finished first on floor and vault, second on the beam and third on the bars. Rileigh Smith scored a 9.1 for her floor routine which qualified her for state.

DeKalb County is less than three weeks away from its April 3 County Meet and this Friday Arabia Mountain will host Southwest DeKalb, McNair, Redan Lithonia and Cedar Grove while Dunwoody hosts Ola, Tucker, Chamblee Lakeside-DeKalb and M.L. King. Lakeside-DeKalb senior Meg Stephens led the Vikings to their second straight county title last season by sweeping gold metals with an 8.70 on the bars, 9.0 on beam, 8.95 floor and 8.50 in vault.  Lakeside has won the DeKalb County meet 17 times in its history.
