in Indianapolis at the
"Indy Motorsports Memorabilia Experience"
Rare Sportsfilms has been exhibiting its video productions at Indianapolis the day before the "500" for more than a quarter of a century!
Once again this year, we will have a booth at the IMME racing show and we hope you'll come on out to visit with us. Find us at the Indy Motorsports Memorabilia Experience on Saturday May 24 in the Pavilion Courtyard near the Pagoda in the infield of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. We'll be located in the far corner of the room, 8AM-5PM. Click this link to get more info about the show.
Rare Sportsfilms President Doak Ewing says, "Any racing fan who appreciates the history of the Indianapolis 500 and is lucky enough to be in Indianapolis during race week should not miss the fun of visiting the greatest assemblage of racing memorabilia and artifacts in the country - all right inside the track all day Saturday. You'll find racing photos, yearbooks, racing magazines, trading cards, old toy and model race cars, driver autographs, old pit badges, 500 ticket stubs, programs, DVDs on past 500s, books on the 500, driver uniforms, helmets and even vintage paving bricks from the original track which has come to be known as 'The Brickyard'! I'm looking forward to displaying our DVDs and seeing old friends and new collectors alike in the back corner of the room all day Saturday! At this show you will meet the most knowledgeable dealers and collectors on Indy 500 memorabilia in the country."
SEE YOU IN MAY - at Indy!

"Race For Professionals" plus "In The Face Of Challenge" - Our new DVD of the 1975 race won by Bobby Unser 39 years ago this May! Here are two different films, beautifully restored, each showing the race from an entirely different perspective and both on this one DVD! "Race For Professionals" by Championship Racefilms for Goodyear has outstanding overall practice, qualification and race coverage. "In The Face Of Challenge" by McGraw-Hill 6 Productions and narrated by track announcer Tom Carnegie is somewhat more of a behind-the-scenes look at the May activities with more live sound bites of race participants. Even as they both cover the '75 race, each film shows completely different footage of the month of May leading up to and including the spectacular classic on Memorial Day!

THE
INDIANAPOLIS 500 --
A CARZOLI FAMILY TRADITION !
Fred Carzoli has sold more than 2,600 cars in the last 16 years and has been recognized as one of the top sales achievers at CarMax. My wife bought a car from Fred - even I bought a car from Fred! But that's NOT why I'm writing about Fred Carzoli today.
While buying my car last summer at CarMax I discovered that Fred and I share a passion for the Indy 500.

Fred Carzoli hands Doak Ewing
the keys to his new car.

My first race was Danny Sullivan's "spin & win" in 1985 and I have not missed one since (this year's race will be my 30th in a row)! But I have nothing on Fred. Carzoli has attended every race since his father first took him in 1960, and he accompanied his Dad, Fred Sr., each year after that until his Dad's sudden death in 1986. Fred Sr. went to his first 500 in 1946! In 1985 they both also took Fred Jr's 11-year old son Chris for the first time, not realizing it would be their only race together as three generations of Carzoli "500" fans. Ever since however, the father-son tradition has continued and this May Fred Jr. and son Chris will be attending their 30th race together and Fred's 55th in a row!
"My Dad Fred Sr. and I co-owned Airport Collision, an auto repair business near Midway Airport in Chicago and he was always a big Indy fan," Fred says. "The year he took me to my first 500, I started racing myself, first with go-karts, then with enduro karts. My Mom did not want me to go racing, so Dad and I decided to take her to the old Raceway Park in Chicago to show her how safe go-kart racing was (between the stock car heat races they would often have a go-kart race). Mom was sitting between us and after about four laps of that night's go-kart race, two guys crashed and flipped down the main straightaway right in front of us, throwing up a shower of sparks and car parts! At that moment, Dad and I thought there would be no way she'd ever agree to let me race, but eventually she did - 'just not at Raceway Park!' I later moved up to race Formula Fords, but by then I had less time to race. It was also requiring more and more money if I wanted to stay competitive, so even though I still loved doing it, I had to make a business decision and quit racing."
Always an A.J. Foyt fan, Fred remembers the 1977 "500" as one of his big Indy thrills. "I was there when Foyt won his 4th Indy 500," he says. "That had never been done before. But my most exciting memory is probably the 1982 duel between Gordy Johncock and Rick Mears, which Johncock won by less than a 10th of a second! Since we used Premier bolts and fasteners at the shop, the Premier people had gotten us great seats for that race in the Tower Terrace right at the start-finish line. It was exciting to see the two cars finish the 500 miles almost side by side!"
Again in 2014, the Saturday "Indy 500 Motorsports Experience" Memorabilia Show held the day before the race and another 500-mile race will continue to add to the annual Carzoli Tradition at the Indianapolis 500!
