BEHIND THE SCENES

At Rare Sportsfilms, Inc.

At the special request of two of our best customers who agreed to joint sponsorship of the restoration of the original films, Rare Sportsfilms is making available something a little different this month to all of our customers!   Years ago I had acquired what I had hoped to be a complete set (with some extras) of "Pro Football Kickoff", an NFL TV show which always aired just before the old NFL "Game Of The Week" on Sunday afternoon in the early 1960's.   (Those were the days before anyone had even dreamed of NFL Films).   After some urging from Dan Geroni of Eatontown, NJ and Matt Mueller of De Pere WI, I finally set out to inspect and clean the films, and check to see how many different weeks I had. Turns out, I had all but one of the 14 weeks of the 1962 season, complete with all of the original commercials! Each show was about 15 minutes long (you can read the detailed description elsewhere in this issue of the Newsletter). Especially interesting were the memorable Vitalis hair tonic commercials, which were always done by famous pro athletes.   (The new DVD each week features Bart Starr, Raymond Berry, Doug Sanders, Jack Kramer or Jim Lynch). Show host Tom Brookshire himself does some of the Rise shaving cream commercials, while Andy Robustelli does some too.   I also discovered that my "extras" actually promoted a different game to start the show, while the commercials and the special feature were the same for each identical week, leading me to surmise that several versions of each week were produced, all similar except for the featured game for a specific viewing area of the country.   For example, most of the shows I acquired were originally from WBBM-TV in Chicago.   This may explain why the promoted game was so often the Bears or Packers. Of course, other top teams also were often featured such as the Colts, Lions, Vikings and Giants.   In fact, every team was featured at least once during the season except the Browns and Steelers (maybe they were on the one show I am missing).   At any rate, I decided to also incorporate these "extra" games into this DVD presentation as an "Extra Bonus", adding to quite a long 3¼ hour presentation.   Because of the extended length of this program and to keep the picture quality up to our high standards, it was therefore necessary to put this on a dual-layered disk!   This cost more, but the sharp, clear picture quality achieved was well worth it.   We hope you who choose to purchase this latest NFL football effort of ours will agree!
