Tony Cocchi, Rare Sportsfilms' first customer, visits Doak Ewing in the
Rare Sportsfilms booth at the
2012 National Convention
Last year at the National Sports Collectors Convention, long-time friend Tony Cocchi again stopped by our booth. Back in November, 1985 Tony became our very first customer, purchasing our first release, the 1947 Boston Braves color film "The Braves Family". Almost 28 years later his check is still proudly displayed on our office wall in Naperville, Illinois! Now a well-known sports memorabilia broker who travels the country looking for vintage, important and valuable sports memorabilia items, Tony never misses the National. It's always good to see Tony, along with many of our long-time friends at the largest sports memorabilia show in the USA!

The Forgotten Championship?
One of our newest DVDs (featured below) is the complete film story of the 1959 Baltimore Colts, the 1959 New York Giants and the 1959 NFL Championship Game - all on one DVD!
I have often thought of this championship game as "the forgotten championship" as so few NFL fans seem to remember it. Most fans forget that the pre-game buildup for this "rematch" was just as intense as the year before, especially coming 12 months after the so-called "Greatest Game Ever Played". Even though the game would be in Baltimore this time, the Giants were out for revenge. Many thought New York was an improved ball club in '59, and indeed in a reversal from the year before, the Giants won the East with comparative ease, while the Colts had to win their last five games to even make it into the Title Game. The game was supposed to be more of a defensive struggle than the year before, and it was for more than three quarters, with the Giants leading 9-7. After a key defensive stop however, the Colts scored 24 straight points in the 4th quarter to break the game open and send Baltimore fans into a gleeful frenzy! Needless to say, Colts fans will never forget it (their only World Championship won in Baltimore), but the game does not leave a lasting memory on other fans. "The same team won again" and "the score was not as close" are a couple of possible reasons the game is not better remembered. The following year's 1960 championship seems much more easily recalled as Van Brocklin's final hurrah and the beginning of the Lombardi dynasty. At any rate, NFL fans can now look back at actual film of the two top clubs from 1959 and relive the "Forgotten Championship".
