Allowance of Company Developed FSC CW Risk Assessments Extended

FSC™International has extended the allowance of company-developed Controlled Wood risk assessments until December 31, 2015. The deadline was set for the end of this calendar year. FSC stated the extension was given for the continued development of FSC National Risk Assessments and to match up with the projected implementation of the new Controlled Wood international standards in 2015. Stay tuned to future editions of this newsletter for details on the controlled wood standard and the development of the U.S. National Risk Assessment. You can read the full FSC-US and FSC-IC statement regarding the extension on the Center's website.

ISO Continues Work
on CoC Standard

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) continues  its work on developing their own wood chain-of-custody standard. This development is in opposition to the two largest certification systems in the world, the Forest Stewardship Council™ and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification. ISO contends that their new standard will focus on areas underserved by the current FSC, SFI™, and PEFC CoC standards and hope to establish a single standard. FSC and PEFC contend that not having coupled forest management certification will render ISO CoC worthless and similarities between FSC and PEFC do not necessitate another CoC system. More information from ISO can be found here along with FSC and PEFC's response here.

Standards Update

The American Tree Farm System™, Sustainable Forestry Initiative ™, and Forest Stewardship Council are all revising and updating portions of their standards. Tree Farm continues to work on their forest management standard and expect to approve and issue their new standard for transition in 2015 with full implementation in 2016. SFI is updating their entire standard (forest management, chain-of-custody, and certified sourcing) for implementation in 2015. FSC is revising and updating several standards including the final approval and publication of the forest management international generic indicators, updates to the chain-of-custody standard, and revision of the controlled wood standard. Several other smaller FSC standards are under revision. You can read more about all three certification system's revisions including links to all the standards on the Center's website here.

Domtar Reups Support of CFWC

Domtar Inc. has generously provided a gift grant to the Center for

Forest and Wood Certification in support of certification. Domtar's donation goes to specifically support the Center's efforts at determining the true cost (e.g. auditing, management plan development, timber sale administration) of increasing family forest owners' access to certified markets to meet certified supply goals. This is Domtar's third straight year of support.
