Logging CoC in Pennsylvania

The Center is currently assisting with logging chain-of-custody in Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania State Forests represent a valuable source of certified timber that in some cases gets cut and hauled without a certified claim. The situation with loggers breaking a chain-of-custody claim is very common. You can learn more about how the Center assisted with logging chain-of-custody in Pennsylvania and other states here at the Center's website.

SFI Standard Open for Comment

The Sustainable Forestry Initiative has opened up the initial commenting period on the SFI 2015-2019 Standards development process. Unlike other certification systems, SFI is soliciting SFI logo comment on their current standards before producing new draft Performance Measures and Indicators. Comments from this solicitation will be reviewed and draft updates created by the SFI Resources committee. Any updates to the standards will be commented on during future open for a future consultation periods. All aspects of the standard (forest management, chain of custody, and fiber sourcing) are open for comment. Learn more about the standard development process here.

Cooperating Forester Training Save the Date

The Center has teamed up with the University of Tennessee Department of Forestry Extension to hold new Cooperating Forester trainings in two locations across Tennessee. The Agency Forester Trainingtrainings are tentatively scheduled for January 7 & 8, 2014 in Jackson, TN and January 9 & 10, 2014 in Cookeville, TN. Attending an initial Cooperating Forester training is required for any consulting or industry forester wishing to enroll woodland owners or their company's forestlands into the Center's group certificates. Continuing education credits are expected to be offered. Stay tuned to future newsletters for further details including specific location, agenda, hotels, and registration fees.

Potlatch in Michigan to Maintain Affiliation with the Center

Since February Potlatch's facility in Gwinn, Michigan has been a sub-group manager of seven logging firms in the Center's CoC group. They will continue this arrangement until 2014 when the loggers are scheduled to be included in Potlatch's own CoC certificate. This sub-group and the loggers involved have been cutting and hauling Michigan State Forest logs with an FSC claim since February of this year. This arrangement has continued to work well and it is encouraging to see an effective partnering between Potlatch and the Center that benefits forest industry, the loggers and ultimately the Michigan public.
