Kentucky's Forest Product Industry Worth $10 Billion to the Economy

KY Forestry Economic Impact Report At the Kentucky Forest Industry Association Annual Meeting in April the Department of Forestry in the University Of Kentucky College Of Agriculture released the Kentucky Forest Economic Impact Report 2012-2013. The report stated the Forest Products Industry contributed nearly $10 billion to the state's economy in 2012. Direct revenues totaled 6.4 Billion with an additional $3.6 billion in indirect and induced contributions. The industry directly employed 24,262 people and was responsible for a total 51,928 which accounted for 2.7 percent of Kentucky's jobs and $1.25 billion in earned income in 2012. Leading the way was the secondary sector that directly employed over 10,000 people. (more...)

Ohio Valley Lumber Drying Association Fall 2013 Meeting 

The fall 2013 meeting of the Ohio Valley Lumber Drying Association will be held November 7 and 8, 2013 in Clarksville TN. Industry tours will include the Gibson Guitar Company, Nashville, TN and the Atlanta Hardwood Corporation, Drying Yard in Clarksville, TN. The Riverview Inn Clarksville will be the host for the technical presentations and the general meeting with evening dinner on November 7. The technical presentations will include: Lumber tally systems, In-Kiln moisture sensing system, and other topics relevant to the drying of hardwood lumber. Governor Beshear Spares Morgan County Tree NurseryNursery
Gov. Steve Beshear has decided to fully rebuild a state tree  nursery in eastern Kentucky that had been devastated by a   tornado last year. The state had been considering to divert insurance claim money to fill a budget gap. (more...)
Profile Knife Grinding and Moulder Set-up and Operation Short Course

The University of Kentucky Forestry Extension is offering a Profile Knife Grinding and Moulder Set-up and Operation Short Course to be conducted at the UK Wood Utilization Center located in Jackson, KY, July 11-12, 2013.   This is a basic course to teach the proper techniques for grinding tools and setting-up and operating a moulder. This course will focus on methods for reducing set-up time and waste. There is a hands-on component to the course. Each participant will grind a set of knives and be involved in calibrating and setting-up a moulder. This course has been structured to meet the needs of all people involved in a moulding or millwork operation, including; moulder operators, supervisors, group leaders and personnel who work in grinding rooms. KY Wood Expo Debuts in Lexington
Everyone is invited to attend the 2013 Kentucky Wood Expo that will celebrate the 30th show sponsored by the Kentucky Forest Industries Association (KFIA). The Wood Expo will make its debut at Masterson Station Park located in Lexington Kentucky on Friday, September 20 and Saturday, September 21. The show offers the entire family a chance to see different types of demonstrations and equipment related to the wood industry. Everything from logging to sawmill equipment to finished wood products by Kentucky craftsmen will be on display. You don't have to work for the wood industry to attend or enjoy the show. (more...)
Div. of Water Re-issues Industrial Stormwater General Permit 

The Kentucky Division of Water (DOW) has re-issued the   Kentucky Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (KPDES) general permit regulating stormwater runoff associated with industrial activity. The general permit will go into effect June 1, 2013. (more...)  

Govt. Public Construction and White Oak Shipments to European Countries Expected to Be Slow

design workThe Hardwood Leader in the June 2013 edition is forecasting slow growth in non -residential construction. Private non-residential construction has been on the rise but will likely not be enough to offset the decline in public construction spending. This is what the Hardwood Leader had to say...
"Private non-residential construction spending was up 3% through Apr, but public construction spending was down 5%, probably due to government restrictions on new projects. Non-residential construction spending will see little growth in 2013 as governments at all levels work within tighter budgets." (more...)
