The Center for Forest and Wood Certification (CFWC or Center)
The CFWC is in its second year of existence. The Center currently has 53,828 acres in its Forest Management (FM) certificate and 72 members in its group Chain of Custody (CoC) certificate. The Center has also provided technical assistance to several primary and secondary producers who are over 5 million in annual revenue including three very large sawmills in Kentucky. Supreme Court Rules on Logging Road Controversy
The US Supreme Court issued a ruling on March 20 that effectively put an end to the current case on logging roads by overruling the 9th Districts Court of Appeals finding that would have required storm water discharge permits for logging roads in the Pacific Northwest. Ohio Valley Lumber Drying Association Meeting April 18 & 19, Bowling Green, KY
The Ohio Valley Lumber Drying Association will be meeting at the Hilton Garden Inn, Bowling Green, KY. The meeting starts at noon on April 18 with speakers addressing the new EPA Boiler Rules and Regulations, Conventional Kiln and Boiler Room Maintenance, An Update on Forest Products Exports in the US, and another Update on Walnut Twig Beetle Phytosanitation. Tours on the Friday schedule include: Woodcraft Industries and Southland Manufacturing with an optional tour of the Corvette museum. Thousand Cankers Disease Confirmed: Great Smokey Mountain National Park
Fears were recently realized when the fungus that causes thousand cankers disease (TCD), was confirmed in declining walnuts in Haywood County, North Carolina within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The disease was found by researchers during surveys of the park's walnuts. This is the first detection of TCD in North Carolina. As a result movement of walnut plants and plant parts including nursery stock, firewood, logs, stumps, roots, branches, and composted and uncomposted chips are being restricted to other areas of the state. Slow European GDP Growth Predicted for 2013
The European Commission forecasts slow GDP growth in 2013 and that it may drive EU companies to exporting to offset the week demand. The Hardwood Leader is suggesting this may be a good time for North American exporters to cement relations with EU costumers for 2014 recovery.
