Getting Personal

Chip incorporates physical activity to his routine to help maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Chip Hann Exchanged Retirement for Exercise

Chip Hann moved to Amissville from Baltimore, Maryland, in 2008 with his wife, Linda. They moved back to her childhood home in Rappahannock. "When I moved here, I had nothing but time, and that was when I started to notice that my overall health was heading in the wrong direction. This concerned me because I had always been healthy and active but retirement wasn't being good for me," said Chip, "I was eating right, but physical activity was the missing component."

One day, Chip received a mailer from the Wellness Center that prompted him to look at their website. Everything fell in line with what Chip wanted in a fitness facility. He didn't want to join a gym filled with noisy, body-builders; instead he wanted to join a facility with staff that would guide and teach him to properly get back on track with his health.

Ask the Experts
Exercise Physiologist, Sara Freeman, shares tips on the importance of maintaining your gym program in the summer.
Q: The weather is nicer and I have been waiting for months to finally get outside! Do I really need to keep my gym program, since I will be more active outdoors?

Now that warmer weather has arrived, everyone is excited about getting outside to garden, hike, boat, etc. You can also breathe new life into traditional fitness activities such as walking and cycling by moving them outdoors. However, this does not mean that your indoor fitness program can go by the wayside. In fact, the baseline level of fitness that you have developed will serve you well by decreasing your chance of injury as you become more active outdoors.

Think of it this way, your exercise program maintains your strength and stamina for your favorite activities. Consider which activities you will be doing and how your program complements them, and spend some time before summer is in full swing to build up a baseline.

For example:

  • If you will be biking, jump into a Group Cycle class, where you can build leg and cardiovascular strength by practicing hills and different speeds in a controlled environment (i.e. no traffic!).
  • Gardening and other types of yard work means lots of up and down. Strong legs and a flexible yet stable core are a must for movements such as raking and lifting bags of topsoil. Core strength allows you to move more efficiently because you waste less energy on peripheral movements. Remember - lift with your legs, not your back!
  • In the summer, many people go barefoot or wear footwear that is less supportive and more open, such as flip flops. This can be a big surprise for your feet, especially if they are used to being cushioned and supported in athletic shoes. This change can lead to painful conditions, such as plantar fasciitis, ankle sprains, or stress fractures. Make sure your feet and lower legs are conditioned by building up strength and range-of-motion in your feet and ankles.
  • Our Concept II rowers can help you practice for boating activities such as rowing and canoeing.

Don't be surprised if you are a little sore after your first bout of planting or beach-walking. Muscle soreness is your body's way of letting you know that you worked yourself a little differently than you are used to. (If your pain is extreme or debilitating, call your doctor.) While stretching has not been proven to reduce soreness, it still may feel good to do some gentle movement, such as yoga or easy walking.

For more advice on getting yourself into shape for the summer, see one of the Wellness Center's exercise physiologists for a program review. We are always here to give you some new ideas, and we offer a climate-controlled environment, so when hot, wet, humid or rainy weather derails your outdoor plans, come see us!

Make Your Membership Work for You

Spring is here. Is your membership renewal period coming up? Are you thinking you will get your exercise outside?

Consider this:

  • For one-year members, you can put your membership on hold for up to 3 months and not lose a dime, so if the summer gets hectic, no problem.
  • While exercising outside is a great idea, will you really follow through when it is 90 degrees or raining? If you keep your membership you have options to keep your exercise routine on track no matter what the weather.
  • A one year membership is always your least expensive option, plus you get the 13th month free!
