Heart Patient Running Strong Again

After Cardiac Rehab

Dr. Ed Szuszczewicz works out on the Fauquier Health Wellness Center's upper body cycle during his last day of cardiac rehab.

Dr. Ed Szuszczewicz estimates he's logged more than 35,000 miles running during his lifetime. At 71 years old, his routine has included running four times a week, at about 5 miles per outing - that's a yearly total of more than 1,000 miles. Although he loves beef and ice cream, he describes his lifestyle as "pretty healthy."

A research physicist and corporate executive by profession, and now an affiliate professor at George Mason University, Dr. Szuszczewicz admits he's probably endured his fair share of stress, but nothing unusual or what one might consider excessive. "I've been happily married for almost 50 years, have four grown children and nine grandchildren; professionally, I followed a track from research physicist through R&D manager to corporate executive. I've always been healthy, always slept well, and my lipid levels were typically in the average range." His blood pressure had always been good, and in April 2010 he passed a nuclear stress test with "flying colors." There was no sign of trouble.

Ask the Experts
Wellness Center Instructor,
Al Maxey, answers common questions about cycling.

Why is indoor cycling popular?

Aerobic training is a great way to lose or maintain weight, boost your health, lighten your mood and give you more overall energy. Many people try cycling because it is low impact; others because they don't feel they are ready for other types of activity. The real draw is the high number of calories you can burn.

What would I actually do in class?

We spin a 44-pound flywheel at high speed! Every class is different depending on the objective, normally there are drills and moves that work the different muscles in your legs and of course you will be developing your cardiovascular system. The basis of indoor cycling is a seated "flat" pedal stroke at a cadence of 80-100 RPM.  With cycling shoes or using the toe clips on the bike, you are able to work several different muscles in your legs by applying power around the full circle of the pedal stroke. From there you may do speed drills to train your muscles and nervous system to spin faster or smoother, or you may increase the tension to simulate hill climbing. Standing while riding shifts the focus to other muscles and can sometimes really crank up the intensity.

How do I get started?

Grab a water bottle and come to a class at the Wellness Center! Show up early and let the instructor know you are new to indoor cycling. They will help you get set up on your bike and be sure to give you extra attention during the class. You do not need to "keep up" with the others in the class or do everything the instructor is doing. The instructor knows how to accommodate multiple fitness levels and objectives in a class, so it is okay to turn it down a notch to make the workout better suited to your level. It is also a good idea to seek out a beginner class where more time is spent on instruction and basic moves. You won't be a beginner for long.

How long before I see results?

The body adapts quickly and physiological changes happen with each cycle of work/rest.  After about two weeks of indoor cycling (at least 2-3 times per week) most people look like a seasoned veteran on the bike. Cycling fitness can increase quickly because "the more you do it, the stronger you get" and "the stronger you get, the more you can do." Participants ramp up very quickly and see major changes in the first few months.

The Wellness Center Recognizes Cardiac Rehab Week
Cardiac Rehabilitation Week, initiated by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR), coincides with both Valentine's Day and American Heart Month, in an effort to draw greater national attention to heart health. This year's theme, -Healing Hearts and Touching Lives, honors the patients, families and healthcare professionals who are dedicated to cardiac rehabilitation as a vehicle for a healthy lifestyle. A special thank you to Linda Costello, RN, Dottie Williams, RN, Hank Peters, RRT and all of the wellness center staff who help our cardiac patients lead healthier lives!

Healthy Eating, Healthy Living

This February try some of our simple, savory snacks. The Beet Chips with Creamy Avo & Goat Cheese Dip are deliciously addictive, in spite of their not-so-pretty appearance. The Crispy Parmesan Edamame and Seasoned & Roasted Chickpeas have similar flavors, but both offer unique tastes.
