May 2014

Christine Davlin

What comes to mind when we think of May?  If we live up north, we are hoping for sunshine, warmth, and flowers, but we have that year round in Southwest Florida!

When I think of May, 3 big days come to mind; Cinco de Mayo, a celebration of Mexican heritage; Mother's Day, (need I say more?); and Memorial Day, a day to remember those who have died serving our country.

There is much to celebrate, and a lot to be thankful for.   I think those that have chosen this field appreciate that.  I have yet to meet a learning and development professional that is not passionate about what they do.  Loving what you do makes all the difference.  Many of us started in other fields or occupations and gravitated to this profession, and are thankful they did.

The birthstone for May is the emerald - green and beautiful. Not only do they say that the emerald is the "love" or relationship stone, it is also known as the intelligence stone.  Increasing communication, memory and creativity - may I have a dozen please!?

Be sure to share your warmth, knowledge, passion and creativity with those around you!

In lieu of a May meeting, ASTD SWFL is a sponsor of the HR Tri-County conference on May 16th.

I will be presenting "How healthy is your culture?"  I hope to see you there!

Warm regards,

Christine Davlin

April Learning Event Recap

Regional executive coach, Gina of Lee Hecht Harris, shares some of the best benefits and biggest barriers to coaching today's workforce.
Organizations are constantly seeking ways to differentiate themselves and better prepare for the future. The increased complexity of work today,
alongside generational and geographic shifts in the workplace, has resulted in organizations ramping up their talent development offerings. The customized, individual approach that characterizes coaching makes it an ideal option for organizations to effectively maximize leadership competencies and skills among its workforce
Organizations that offer coaching beyond their executive team report increased effectiveness in building skills and competencies. It would seem that organizations that universally offer coaching to employees are in a better position to transfer critical knowledge and build a stronger internal talent pipeline, which arguably sets them up for more success in the future.
