STEMing the Skills Gap - Putting STEM Jobs in Reach

  

Washington could add as many as 110,000 new jobs by 2017 by closing skill gaps - the mismatch between the skills people have and those employers need, according to a March 2013 Washington Round table report.

 

STEM professions face the most critical demand. Of the 25,000 jobs vacant for three months or more due to a shortage of qualified candidates, 80 percent are in high-demand STEM and health care fields. Employers are desperate to find STEM workers, while job-seekers without STEM training are struggling to find work.

Department of Labor Grant Announcement

Availability of $474.5 Million to Create and Expand Innovative Partnerships

  

Acting Secretary of Labor Seth D. Harris  announced on April 19, the availability of $474.5 million to create and expand innovative partnerships between community colleges and businesses to educate and train workers with the skills employers need. This third round of funding since 2009 under the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training grants program brings total investments to nearly $1.5 billion.

 

This latest round of funding will invest in innovative and evidence-based training models that include strong partnerships with local employers and employer organizations, including sector-based strategies. Strong partnerships and work-based training will help ensure that curricula and training are aligned with the practical skills and competencies industries seek from workers.

Funds also will encourage community colleges to better track data on the employment and earnings of students after they graduate as a tool to improve their programming and to create employment results scorecards that will help prospective students choose between training programs.

Cultural Competency in Health Care

Address the Cultural and Linguistic Barriers to Health Care Delivery 

    

The Office of Minority Health was mandated by the United States Congress (P.L. 101-527) in 1994 to develop the capacity of health care professionals to address the cultural and linguistic barriers to health care delivery and increase access to health care for limited English-proficient people. Additionally this mandate directs OMH to support research, demonstrations, and evaluations to test new and innovative models aimed at increasing knowledge and providing a clearer understanding of health risk factors and successful prevention intervention strategies for minority populations.

 

The Center for Linguistic and Cultural Competency in Health Care (CLCCHC) is a response to P.L. 101-527, which requires the OMH to develop the capacity of health care professionals to address the cultural and linguistic barriers to health care delivery and increase limited English-speaking individuals' access to health care. The law directs the OMH to support research, demonstrations, and evaluations to test innovative models aimed at increasing knowledge and providing a clearer understanding of health risk factors and successful prevention

Interprofessional Simulation Team Training Faculty Toolkit

An Aid for Faculty and Instructors 

 

The purposes of this online toolkit are:

  • To be an aid for helping faculty and instructors set up a complete interprofessional simulation team training session.
  • To provide a packaged interprofessional team training session using simulation/role-play as the vector by which health professional students can learn together to develop and improve team and communication skills.
  • To provide novice online training for faculty participating in the team training sessions.

The toolkit contains:

  • a detailed step-by-step guide for lead course instructors setting up simulation team training in a simulation (or similar type) lab,  which includes   
    • methods and agendas for how to conduct simulation training with health (inter)professional students
    • simulation scenarios for adult acute care simulation
    • simulation scenarios for OB acute care simulation
    • instructions for simulation technicians
    • debrief guides 
  • condensed facilitator guides for faculty assisting with facilitation of the simulation scenarios

Society for Simulation in Healthcare

White Paper - Interprofessional Education and Healthcare Simulation Symposium

Representatives from 22 organizations gathered in January 2012 in San Diego for the Interprofessional Education and Healthcare Simulation Symposium, just prior to the annual International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare, to explore how simulation may best be utilized to achieve safe, high quality, accessible, patient-centered care.

The result is a white paper, issued by the National League for Nursing and the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, supported in part by the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation, detailing how simulation may advance interprofessional education (IPE) and interprofessional practice (IPP).

"We gathered international experts representing medicine, nursing, dentistry, allied health, accreditation, and patient safety to explore how simulation can be used to enhance IPE," says Beth Mancini, past president of SSH and associate dean at the University of Texas at Arlington. "This unique collaboration of healthcare professionals allowed us to develop recommendations and create opportunities for future collaboration and research in IPE."

Three specific goals of this report include the following:

1. Describe current models (including strengths and weaknesses) for the use of healthcare simulation to enhance interprofessional education (IPE) for healthcare professionals

2. Identify gaps in knowledge related to the use of simulation to enhance IPE, as well as how to addresses challenges and barriers to its use.

3. Articulate opportunities for further collaborations and research

CDC Launches New Educational Website

Laboratory Science for Teachers and Students

  

CDC's Office of Surveillance, Epidemiology and Laboratory has launched a new website, designed especially for teachers and students, to learn about the critical role of public health laboratories in protecting the public against diseases and other health hazards.  

 
The website, ABCs to Public Health, was created by CDC scientists and public health experts and contains five teaching portals - one each for elementary, middle school, high school, college and teachers.  Each portal hosts a wide range of information to web links and videos on laboratory science.  This new educational tool will:

  • Raise awareness about the world of laboratory science for both students and teachers;
  • Stimulate interest in students on the variety of laboratory science career opportunities available to them; and
  • Provide teachers with resources to introduce more laboratory science topics and discussion in the classrooms.
