John 4:1-5:18

4:1-6 After the Pharisees found out that He was gaining a larger following than John the Baptist, Jesus went back to Galilee. Passing through Samaria He met a woman at the well in Sychar. Jacob had given this land to his son Joseph.

Who were the Samaritans?

The animosity between Jews in the south and Samaritans in the north started way back with Rehoboam, son of Solomon. After King Solomon died the Israelites were divided into the 10 tribes of the Northern Kingdom of Israel and the 2 tribes of the southern Kingdom of Judah. They are often referred to simply as Israel and Judah. The Assyrians conquered Israel and brought many Gentiles to live among them and intermarry with them. Naturally, their worship gradually included the worship of foreign gods. More than 100 years later, Judah was captured by the Babylonians but they were allowed to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem by order of Cyrus of Persia. Judah continued to be monotheistic and did not intermarry with foreigners. The Northern Kingdom of Israel violently opposed the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem during the time of Ezra and Nehemiah. The Samaritan woman at the well was a descendant of the Northern Kingdom of Israel. Her people worshiped at an altar on Mount Gerizim.

v. 7-15 Jesus asked the woman for a drink from the well even though Jews typically didn't associate with Samaritans. Furthermore, a Jewish rabbi certainly would not talk to a Samaritan woman. The woman wants to know how He could ask her for a drink. But Jesus turns the tables and says she should be asking Him for a drink of "living water." Again she challenges Him by asking if He thinks He is greater than Jacob who dug this well. Furthermore, how was He, a traveler who didn't even have a water jar, going to get this living water? Jesus contrasts the well water with "living water." Not only does living water quench one's thirst, it becomes a spring of water within the person "welling up to eternal life." Now the woman is really interested. She wants this water that can permanently quench her thirst so she won't have to keep going to the well every day.

Since ancient times the Bible has been read aloud to groups of people who were eager to hear the words of Life. We're really no different today. Believers still look to the Bible for wisdom and instruction. We belong in the Word together. Thank you for your participation in these classes. I hope you will pass this email on to others and invite them to attend a Bible study.

Grace and peace,

Leviticus chapters 1-10 summary

Chapter 4

SIN OFFERINGS

For sin of an anointed priest bring a young bull.

Present bull - lay hand on - slaughter it - sprinkle blood in front of sanctuary curtain 7 times - blood on incense altar horns - pour rest of blood at base of altar - remove all fat, kidneys, liver - burn them on altar - burn rest of bull outside the camp.

For sin of whole Israelite community bring a young bull.

Assembly presents bull - elders lay hands on it - slaughter it - priest follows same procedure as sin offering for priests.

For sin of a leader bring a male goat.

Present - lay hand on - slaughter it - blood on horns of altar - pour rest of blood at base of altar - burn fat on altar.

For sin of a member of the community bring a female goat or female lamb.

Present - lay hand on - slaughter it - follow same procedure as for a leader.

Chapter 5

Examples of sins:

Not speaking up to testify about something you have seen.

Touching anything ceremonially unclean like a dead animal.

Touching human uncleanness.

Careless swearing of an oath.

Must confess the sin and bring female lamb/goat or two doves/young pigeons. One bird is for sin offering, the other for burnt offering. A very poor person may bring about 2 liters of fine flour with no oil or yeast added. A handful is burned, the rest belongs to the priest.

Chapter 6

GUILT OFFERINGS

Bring a ram of proper value.

Must make restitution for what you failed to do and add 20% to it. Give it all to the priest.

Examples of violations:

Sins in regard to the Lord's holy things.

Sins and does what is forbidden in the Lord's commands.

Sins and is unfaithful to the Lord by deceiving his neighbor, cheats him, lies about lost property, swears falsely, ...

Must make full restitution and add 20%. On the day you offer the guilt offering give restitution to the person you have wronged.

-- Aaron & sons must keep a fire burning on the altar. It must never go out. Priest must change clothes and carry ashes out of the camp to a place that is ceremonially clean.

-- Aaron & sons & all male descendants must eat the grain offering without yeast in the Tabernacle courtyard. Whatever touches those sacrifices will become holy.

-- Aaron & sons & all male descendants may eat meat of sin offerings except those whose blood is brought into the Tent of Meeting.

Chapter 7

Aaron & sons & all male descendants may eat the meat of the guilt offerings but must eat in a holy place. Meat of fellowship offerings must be eaten the same day if it's been offered as an expression of thankfulness to the Lord. If it is a freewill offering or the result of a vow then the meat may be eaten on the second day as well but on the third day it will be considered impure. Only those who are ceremonially clean may eat meat of the fellowship offering.

The Israelites must not eat the fat of cattle, sheep or goats nor the blood of birds or animals. The fat of an animal found dead may be used for other purposes.

The priest's share of the fellowship offering is the breast and right thigh of the animal.

Chapter 8

Moses ordained Aaron & sons to the priesthood in the way prescribed by the Lord. He anointed the Tabernacle and everything in it with blood and oil. A bull was slaughtered for a sin offering, its hide and flesh was burned outside the camp. A ram was slaughtered for a burnt offering and another ram for the ordination offering. Bread was also offered on the altar. Aaron and his garments were consecrated by blood and oil. They ate meat and bread in front of the Tent of Meeting and stayed there 7 days for their ordination.

If they do not do what the Lord commands they will die.

Chapter 9

On the 8th day Aaron & sons offered a bull for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering. The Israelites offered a male goat for a sin offering, a calf and a lamb for a burnt offering, an ox and a ram for a fellowship offering, and a grain offering mixed with oil. When they finished these sacrifices the glory of the Lord appeared to all the people and fire came out of the presence of the Lord consuming what was still on the altar. The people shouted for joy and fell facedown in worship.

Chapter 10

Aaron's sons Nadab and Abihu put fire and incense in their censers and offered unauthorized fire before the Lord, contrary to His command. Fire came from the presence of the Lord and killed them. Aaron remained silent. Their cousins carried their bodies outside the camp. Moses would not allow Aaron and his two remaining sons to publicly mourn the loss but the rest of their family could. Aaron & sons must remain at the Tabernacle that day to eat the priest's portion of the offerings. Moses was angry with them for not eating the meat of the sin offering but Aaron defended himself by saying the Lord would not have been pleased if he had eaten it the day that his sons were killed. Moses was satisfied with his answer. Moses also commanded them not to drink alcohol whenever they went into the Tent of Meeting.

Please read chapters 11-16 for next time.

John 4:1-5:18

4:16-26 Jesus told her to get her husband and come back. She simply replied that she had no husband. Jesus surprises her by telling her He knew she had had five husbands and the man she was now with was not her husband. She calls Him a prophet and says nothing to defend her lifestyle but instead asks Him a heavy theological question regarding where God should be worshiped. Jesus again gave a surprising answer by saying that the "true worshipers" of God will neither worship on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. Salvation is of the Jews because Jesus was born a Jew, but "God is spirit, and His worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth," not on a particular mountain or in the temple. The woman knows that the Messiah will come some day and explain everything. But Jesus said, "I who speak to you am He."

v. 27-42 Just then His disciples returned but were afraid to ask Him why he was speaking to a Samaritan woman. She left her water jar behind and went into town to tell everyone to come out and see Jesus because He might be the Messiah. Meanwhile, the disciples tried to get Jesus to eat something but He explained that His food was to do the will of His Father. As a large crowd of Samaritans started coming out toward them Jesus told His disciples that this "field" of people was ready to be harvested. Many Samaritans believed in Jesus as the savior of the world (not just of the Jews) and He spent two more days with them. Interestingly, Jesus never performed any miracles there. They simply believed what He told them.

v. 43-54 Next Jesus went to Galilee and was warmly received because the people had seen the miracles He performed at the Passover Feast in Jerusalem. At Cana a royal official asked Him to heal his son who was near death. Jesus told him to go, his son was healed. On his way home the man was met by his servants who told him the boy had been healed at exactly the same time that Jesus had said, "Your son will live." So the man and all his household believed.

5:1-18 Later, Jesus went to Jerusalem for a festival. Near the Sheep Gate was a pool called Bethesda were disabled people used to lie and wait for the pool to be supernaturally "stirred" so they could be healed. Jesus only made contact with one man there-- a paralytic who'd been there 38 years and had not been healed. Jesus asked him if he wanted to be healed and the man replied that there was no one to help him get in the water. Jesus told him to get up, pick up his mat, and walk. He did this and walked away not knowing who had healed him. The Pharisees were upset with him for carrying his mat on the Sabbath, though they didn't seem interested in the fact that he'd been healed. Jesus came to the man once more and told him to stop sinning or else something worse may happen to him. When the man told the Pharisees it was Jesus who healed him they began to persecute Him even more. But Jesus defended His actions by saying that His Father is always working and so He is working as well. So the Jews wanted to kill Jesus because He was breaking the Sabbath and calling Himself equal to God. Both of these charges were punishable by death according to the Law of Moses.

 Much more next time.
