Tuesday Cafe Class Exodus |
Exodus 39:1-40:38
39:1-43 The expert weavers made the priestly garments for Aaron and his sons. The ephod had gold strands, cut from hammered sheets of pure gold, worked into the embroidered linen. It would have glittered in the sunshine. Its waistband was woven in one piece with the ephod. Two onyx stones were engraved with the names of the twelve tribes and set in gold filigree settings. These were placed on the shoulders of the ephod as memorial stones. Aaron's breastpiece was made the same way, with the gold strands worked into it. They placed twelve precious stones on it and each stone was engraved with one of the names of the twelve tribes. The breastpiece was attached to the ephod with braided gold chains and tied with a blue cord. Aaron's robe was blue and woven as one piece. On the hem they alternated gold bells and embroidered pomegranates. Aaron and his sons wore fine linen tunics. His sons wore sashes and headbands, but Aaron wore a linen turban. A gold diadem engraved with the words, "Holy to the Lord" was placed on the front of the turban. It was fastened with a blue cord. When the work was all finished the craftsmen brought everything to Moses for his approval. "The Israelites had done all the work just as the Lord had commanded Moses." After he inspected all of it Moses blessed them for their obedience.

Thursday Read-to-Believe Class John
John 2:12-3:36
2:12-17 After Jesus performed the miracle of changing water to wine in Cana He traveled to Capernaum with his mother, brothers and disciples. Jesus went to Jerusalem for the Passover celebration and found that the courtyard around the Temple had been turned into a marketplace. He made a whip and drove out all the livestock and overturned the tables of the money changers saying, "How dare you turn my Father's house into a market!" The disciples remembered Psalm 69 which said of Him, "Zeal for your house will consume me."
v. 18-25 The Jewish leaders demanded that He perform a miraculous sign to prove that He had authority to drive the merchants out of the Temple court. Jesus responded in a way that He knew they would not understand by saying, "Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days." The Jewish leaders protested by telling Him it took 46 years to build the Temple. They did not believe Jesus could rebuild it in three days. Of course we know Jesus was talking about Himself-- referring to His body as a temple and that He would be resurrected on the third day. Jesus said it for the benefit of His disciples. They would remember this after He was raised from the dead. This helped increase their faith in Him. During the Passover festival Jesus performed miracles and many people "believed in His name." But Jesus knew what was in men's hearts and therefore He did "not entrust Himself to them." |

Since ancient times the Bible has been read aloud to groups of people who were eager to hear the words of Life. We're really no different today. Believers still look to the Bible for wisdom and instruction. We belong in the Word together. Thank you for your participation in these classes. I hope you will pass this email on to others and invite them to attend a Bible study.
Grace and peace, Sandy Blank

Exodus 39:1-40:38
40:1-33 The Lord told Moses to set up the Tabernacle on the first day of the first month in the second year of their calendar. The Israelites completed the Tabernacle during their first year after leaving Egypt. The Lord gave detailed instructions about the order in which everything should be put in place. The ark of the covenant must be put in the tent and shielded with its curtain. Moses put the stone tablets in the ark. Then he put the table, the lampstand, and the altar of incense in place before setting up the outside curtain on the tent of meeting. Next the altar of burnt offering was positioned at the entrance to the Tabernacle with the bronze basin near it. Then they set up the courtyard and anointed everything with the sacred oil. Moses brought Aaron and his sons to the entrance of the tent of meeting, washed them with water, and dressed them in their sacred garments. He anointed them as priests. This was the beginning of the Levitical priesthood. "Their anointing will be to a priesthood that will continue for all generations to come." Moses did all that the Lord commanded. All their work was finally finished.
v. 34-38 Then something amazing happened. The cloud that had been leading them covered the tent of meeting "and the glory of the Lord filled the Tabernacle." Moses could not enter the tent because of the glory of the Lord. From that day on, whenever the cloud lifted from above the Tabernacle the Israelites would break camp and move on. But if the cloud did not lift then they would stay where they were until it lifted. "So the cloud of the Lord was over the Tabernacle by day, and fire was in the cloud by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel during all their travels." So we see that even though the Lord had threatened not to go with them He was in fact with them in a visible way throughout their years in the wilderness. He had not abandoned them in spite of their rebellion.
This concludes the book of Exodus.
Please read chapters one through ten of Leviticus before the next class.

John 2:12-3:36
3:1-8 Verse 25 used the word "man" three times. In the next verse John writes, "Now there was a man" named Nicodemus. He was a Pharisee and a member of the Sanhedrin who visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus acknowledged that Jesus was a teacher sent by God and even referred to Him as a rabbi, although Jesus had never gone through the formal training to become a rabbi. It seems that the miracles had convinced Nicodemus and some of his colleagues. Jesus responded by teaching him about the necessity of being born again. Nicodemus is thinking very literally and questions how a grown man could be physically born a second time. But Jesus insists that a man must be "born of water and the Spirit" in order to enter the kingdom of God. "Flesh gives birth to flesh, the Spirit gives birth to spirit." Then He gave a physical example to help Nicodemus understand. The wind blows and even though you can hear it you can't tell where it comes from. That's what it's like with "everyone born of the Spirit."
v. 9-13 But Nicodemus still doesn't understand. Jesus scolds him because he is one of Israel's teachers and he doesn't understand this. When Jesus says "we speak of what we know and we testify to what we have seen," the "we" probably refers to Himself and the Holy Spirit because at this time the disciples are still very new and are not likely to be explaining such things to anyone yet. Jesus goes on to say that "you people," the Jewish leaders, do not accept their testimony. If they won't accept what Jesus says about "earthly things" then they won't accept what He says about heavenly things either. Jesus, the Son of Man, has come from heaven.
v. 14-21 Jesus took a story from the Israelite's wilderness wandering and connected it to His own role of dying on the cross. Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole so that people who had been bitten by poisonous snakes would be able to live and not die. (Numbers 21:4-9) In the same way Jesus would be lifted up on the cross and all who looked to Him in faith may have eternal life. This sacrifice is evidence that God loved the world enough to give up His only begotten Son. Jesus was not sent to condemn the world but to save it. "Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son." These are strong statements that were probably well beyond Nicodemus' understanding. But the Lord's words have been preserved for future generations to read. Light has come into the world, but men love darkness because it hides their evil deeds. Evil men hate the light but men who live by the truth come into the light and everyone can see that what they have done has been done through God.
v. 22-30 Next Jesus and the disciples went out near where John the Baptist was baptizing people. Some of John B's disciples argued with a Jewish man about ceremonial washings. They came to John B. and reported that Jesus was baptizing people on the other side of the Jordan and "everyone is going to Him." John B. reminded them that he was not the Christ but was sent ahead of Him. Jesus was like a bridegroom and John B. was like the groom's friend who waits for Him to arrive. John B. was overjoyed that Jesus had come to begin His ministry. "He must become greater; I must become less," said John B.
v. 31-36 John B. knew that he himself was from the earth and Jesus was from above. Because He is from above He is above all. John B. is only able to speak as one is from the earth but Jesus testifies as One who has seen and heard things that cannot be accepted by men. But anyone who does accept His testimony certifies "that God is truthful." Jesus speaks the words of God and gives the Spirit "without limit." John B. knew that Jesus was the Son of God and that God loved Him and "placed everything in His hands." Those who believe in the Son have eternal life "but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him."
Much more next time.
