Elected officials at the national and local levels have spoken up in support of funding for the National Park Service to acquire the Wright Company factory buildings as a unit of the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park.

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown signed a letter dated July 30 to Jonathan B. Jarvis, director of the National Park Service, asking him to allocate $800,000 in Land and Water Conservation Fund dollars in the park service's 2016 budget for the acquisition of the two buildings, built in 1910 and 1911 by Wilbur and Orville Wright's company.

In a letter Dated July 24, U.S. Rep. Michael Turner urged Jarvis to include the funding necessary to acquire the buildings.

Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley wrote in support of LWCF funding in a letter dated July 14. She noted the city, state of Ohio and private partners have contributed more than $5.4 million to clean up the industrial site where the buildings are located and added that Dayton is considering a $500,000 grant for site improvements.

The National Park Service has determined the buildings were the first in America constructed for the purpose of aircraft production.
Aviation heritage displayed at AirVenture

National Park Service rangers from the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park and NAHA volunteers helped tell the story of the invention of the airplane to thousands of visitors last week at the Experimental Aircraft Association's annual AirVenture convention in Oshkosh, Wis.

Throughout the week, rangers and volunteers answered questions and presented forums about aviation heritage at sites like Dayton's national park and the Wright Brothers National Memorial at Kitty Hawk, N.C. They also addressed concerns about access to NPS locations by land or air.

The park service was one of several agencies with exhibits in AirVenture's Federal Pavilion. Nearly 21,000 visitors passed through the pavilion every day, according to Ranger Nicholas Georgeff.
