Age no limit for heritage volunteers
 |
A nonagenarian is a person 90 years of age or older. Wright "B" Flyer Inc. has four nonagenarian volunteers: Bob Mayne (left), 90; Jack Ohmart, 95; Sam Strother, 90, and Les Denning, 90. Like Wright "B" Flyer, NAHA's aviation heritage partners depend on volunteers for every aspect of their operation. Many are retirees, and volunteers like these prove you're never too old! Retired Navy Capt. Robert L. "Hoot" Gibson, a five-time space shuttle pilot and air racer, is among the four aviation legends to be inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame at its enshrinement ceremony on Friday, Oct. 4, in the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force.
As a Navy fighter pilot, Gibson flew combat in Southeast Asia, graduated from the Navy's "Top Gun" air combat school and served as a flight test pilot before joining NASA's astronaut corps in 1978. He flew five space shuttle missions, including four as commander. Gibson has logged more than 14,000 hours in over 130 types of aircraft. Others to be enshrined include Retired Army Maj. Gen. Patrick H. Brady, who flew more than 2,500 combat missions over Vietnam as a Dust Off helicopter pilot, saving over 5,000 wounded, and earned the Medal of Honor; the late Charles Alfred "Chief" Anderson, who helped develop the Tuskegee Institute's civilian pilot training program for African Americans who became the legendary "Tuskegee Airmen", and the late Dwane L. Wallace, who influenced general aviation as chairman and chief executive of Cessna Aircraft. Tickets and sponsorship opportunities are available now. Visit nationalaviation.org for more details. The Hall of Fame is a NAHA partner. |
