NASA Administrator Charles Bolden will be among the aviation and space pioneers and legends at the National Aviation Hall of Fame's 51st annual enshrinement ceremony on Friday, Oct. 4.

Bolden, who is also a former space shuttle astronaut, will present an enshrinement to retired Navy Capt. Robert L. "Hoot" Gibson, a former space shuttle pilot who flew five space missions, including four as commander. Gibson is one of four air and space pioneers to be inducted.

The black-tie gala will take place in the hall of fame's learning center and the adjoining National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, which is developing a space shuttle exhibit (see next article) based on the Cockpit Crew Trainer it received from NASA after the space agency retired its shuttle fleet.

Patron and premium seat tickets are now on sale, and sponsorship opportunities are available. Visit nationalaviation.org for more information. NAHF is a NAHA partner.

Starting Thursday, July 25, National Museum of the U.S. Air Force visitors can test their skill at landing a space shuttle orbiter with either of two new simulators that will be available free of charge

Designed by Historic Space Systems of Danville, Ohio, the simulators mimic a space shuttle commander's and pilot's stations and feature a life-size reproduction of an orbiter's forward flight deck.

They're among the first items the museum has received in support of the Crew Compartment Trainer exhibit. Display Dynamics, Inc. of Clayton, Ohio, is in the final design phase of the CCT exhibit, which includes mockups of the payload bay, engine and tail sections, with supporting structures and access ramps. The firm expects to install them in the museum by late fall.

Historic Space Systems is the same company that built the space shuttle landing simulator, an Apollo lunar landing simulator and a Gemini 8 spacecraft docking simulator at the Armstrong Air and Space Museum in Wapakoneta. Both museums are NAHA partners.
