Salazar, Jarvis visit Buffalo Soldiers National Monument in Wilberforce
Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis visited Wilberforce in Greene County on Tuesday, April 2, to celebrate the establishment of the Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument as the country's 401st national park.
Joining them were representatives from the National Park Foundation and the Trust for Public Land, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity members and local officials and community members.
The site commemorates Colonel Charles Young, a distinguished African American army officer of the late 19th and early 20th centuries who was the third African American to graduate from West Point and the first to achieve the rank of colonel.

National Museum of USAF works to minimize impact of sequestration
The National Museum of the United States Air Force will remain open seven days per week with free admission despite budget reductions caused by sequestration, officials said Tuesday, April 2.
The reductions will force the museum's Presidential and Research and Development Galleries to close until further notice beginning May 1. The weekly Behind the Scenes Tours of the museum's restoration area will end after the April 26 tour until further notice, and the Wings & Things Guest Lectures on April 30 and May 22 and all summer Aerospace Camps are canceled.
The Air Force Museum Foundation, whose main mission is to support the museum's growth and special events, is helping to mitigate the impact by covering utility costs one day per week from May through September. Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Richard V. Reynolds, chairman of the Foundation's board of managers, said the foundation will draw funds from business operations and investments accounts.
Ohio's largest free tourism destination, the National Museum is the world's largest and oldest military air museum. An estimated 1.2 million visitors go through the museum every year. |

Delphi demolition will reveal Wright Company factory buildings
More of Dayton's aviation heritage is about to be revealed. Home Avenue Redevelopment LLC is set to begin demolishing buildings on the former Delphi Home Avenue plant on Tuesday, April 9.
All former Delphi buildings are to be demolished except for the historic Wright Company factory buildings-America's first purpose-built airplane factory-and attached historical buildings that are collectively known as Plant 3. As the surrounding buildings fall in the coming months, the Wright Company buildings will become visible from West Third Street and U.S. 35.
NAHA is working with Home Avenue Redevelopment, Hull & Associates Inc., the National Park Service and the city of Dayton to restore the factory buildings and preserve them as a unit of the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park. Go to visitNAHA.org for more information about the Wright Company factory buildings. |
