CFC Funds Research on Mobile Crisis and ED Usage for Children with Behavioral Health Concerns
The Children's Fund of Connecticut (CFC) awarded a $57,500 grant to the University of Connecticut School of Social Work to evaluate the impact of the Emergency Mobile Psychiatric Services (EMPS) program on emergency department utilization (ED) among youth with behavioral health concerns. The investigative team, led by Dr. Michael Fendrich, will use administrative data from EMPS and Medicaid claims to compare EMPS clients to a matched comparison group on ED utilization. They will also conduct focus groups with EMPS providers to supplement the quantitative findings and to further inform system and practice changes. The project will identify risk factors influencing subsequent ED use among those who receive EMPS services. Issue Brief: Mobile Crisis Services for Youth

In July CHDI released an Issue Brief "Caring for Children in the Midst of a Behavioral Health Crisis: Connecticut's Mobile Crisis Intervention Service." Juvenile Justice TF-CBT Learning Collaborative Concludes
2015-2016 JJ TF-CBT Learning Collaborative Participants and Faculty
As a result of a year-long learning collaborative project, Connecticut's juvenile justice staff in Hartford, Bridgeport and Middletown court districts now work closely with local mental health providers to address the impact of trauma in the lives of justice-involved youth. CHDI in partnership with the Court Support Services Division of the Judicial Branch brought together Juvenile Probation Officers, staff from the Child Youth Family Centers, and clinicians from area behavioral health agencies for the year-long process of learning and collaboration. Youth in the justice system now have access to Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT). For more information, click here.
WICC Radio Highlights Social-Emotional Development and Early Literacy
On August 23, Judith Meyers was a guest on Mike Bellamy's WICC-AM morning radio show. Meyers highlighted CHDI's recent IMPACT on the connection between social and emotional development and early literacy and language skills. She spoke about the research findings, community strategies that can be used to promote the link between the two domains, what parents can do, and available resources. The IMPACT is available at this link: Linking Social Emotional Development and Early Literacy. Each month, WICC highlights an early childhood topic through a partnership with the CT Early Childhood Alliance. Click here to listen to the interview.
Reducing Preschool Suspension and Expulsions
A recent NPR story highlights how Connecticut is leading the way in reducing preschool suspensions and expulsions with support from an innovative classroom-level intervention developed by Advanced Behavioral Health called the Early Childhood Consultation Partnership (ECCP). CHDI and the Children's Fund of Connecticut played a key role as champions and funders in bringing mental health consultation to child care in Connecticut beginning in 2001. The Children's Fund provided a grant to Walter Gilliam to conduct the first large scale evaluation of ECCP. New research published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry shows that ECCP continues to make a difference in preschools.
