Passport Picks Fall
Greetings!

Summer is coming to a close with Labor Day celebrations throughout the country and the parks. Celebrate at Fort Larned NHS, Kennesaw Mountain NBP, Saint Paul's Church NHS, or find another event.

Our picks below highlight activities that are taking place during September, October, and November. Pack up the car, grab your Passport, and spend some time exploring the parks this autumn!
  1. National Public Lands Day. National Public Lands Day (NPLD) is the nation's largest, single-day volunteer event for public lands-local, state, and federal. It's also a fee-free day in all national parks, so even if you are not able to volunteer, you can still visit and enjoy the parks. It takes place on September 28. Find a participating site.
  2. Veterans Day Weekend. October 9-11 is a fee-free weekend in all the parks! Many sites are honoring veterans and their service to the country. Find an event.
  3. Naturalization Ceremonies. Did you know that immigrants who are becoming US citizens take part in ceremonies, some of which are hosted by NPS sites? These include Homestead NM of America, Fort Scott NHS, Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, and Point Reyes NS.
  4. Star Parties. The autumn landscape is beautiful in the parks, but here's a chance to turn your gaze skyward! Join Carlsbad Caverns NP, Rock Creek Park, Craters of the Moon NP & Pres, El Morro NM, Saint Gaudens NHS, or others to explore the night sky.
  5. Sesquicentennial events at Chickamauga & Chattanooga NMP. Commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Chickamauga in September, enjoy the 2013 Tennessee Civil War Sesquicentennial Signature Event in October, and 150th anniversary of the Battles for Chattanooga in November.
  6. Civil War Sesquicentennial Events. Other events outside of Chickamauga & Chattanooga NMP include Fort Yorktown Sesquicentennial Weekend and the 150th Anniversary of the Gettysburg Address.
  7. War of 1812-Battle of Lake Erie Anniversary events. Find a detailed list of events here, but you can catch the Tall Ship Festival this weekend and the War of 1812 Grand Parade later in September.
  8. National Native American Day. 9/27 is Native American Day. Aztec Ruins NM is presenting Salt of the Earth: Native American Tails, Trails, Trade, Trials, Tribulations, and More, and Bandelier NM is holding a celebration.
  9. Festivals. Fall is a season of festivals in the parks. Head to Congaree NP for Swampfest, celebrate Sagamore Hill Day, enjoy the Storytelling Festival at Big South Fork NR&RA, Fall into the Farm at Carl Sandburg NHS, or find another festival at a park near you!
  10. Especially for Kids. Take one last summer hurrah at Chattahoochee River NRA's Kids' Fishing Day, or earn a new badge at the Tuskegee Institute Junior Ranger Day.
Bonus: Teacher escape weekends at Great Smoky Mountain NP. This one-night workshop is $50 to register and is an opportunity to learn about bringing students to the park and to take some time to relax.

Entry fees to all the parks mentioned above may apply even if an event is listed as free. Please check the park's website on NPS.gov to verify fees as they may change seasonally.

Remember, you can find other park events by visiting the "Schedule of Events" page on any park's NPS web page.

We hope you enjoy the parks this season!

Sincerely,
