Passport Picks Summer

We've put together this list to highlight some of the activities that are taking place in June, July, and August. Pack up the car, grab your Passport�, and spend some time exploring the parks this summer! You can start June 1 with National Trails Day or plan the rest of the season with our picks below. 
Passport� Picks for Summer
    1. National Get Outdoors Day.This annual event encourages healthy and active outdoor fun. You can find a list of other participants here. Mark your calendar for Saturday June 8, and go outdoors and explore!
    2. Founders Day. Sunday August 25, 2013 marks the 97th birthday of our national park system! Many parks will be having celebrations and all parks are fee-free! Find a park to look for events.
    3. Gettysburg NMP 150th Anniversary of Civil War Battle. Head to the countryside of Pennsylvania to explore one of the most famous Civil War battles. Special events will be held July 1-4; they are free and open to the public. This is a can't-miss event for any Civil War buff!
    4. Independence Day. On Wednesday July 4 America will celebrate 236 years of independence. Many parks will be holding special events-including the reopening of the Statute of Liberty! Tickets for ferries and tours are available now. You can also contact your local park for other events or check out nps.gov for information.
    5. Flag Day. June 14 is the anniversary of the day the Stars and Stripes was officially adopted in 1777. Independence NHP will be observing the day from 9-11am with a free event.
    6. Summer Day Camps for Junior Rangers. Many parks offer the chance for kids to continue learning this summer with special camps run by rangers in the parks-many for free. Montezuma Castle NM in June, Jimmy Carter NHS in June & July, Appomattox Courthouse NHP & Tuskegee Airmen NHS in July, & Fort Washington Park in July & August. Check your local park for camps and other Junior Ranger activities.
    7. Festivals & Heritage Days. Celebrate the season with food, fun, and activities around the country this summer.  Celebrate Juneteenth at Booker T Washington NM or visit Governors Island NM for Army Heritage Day in June. Point Reyes NS is hosting its 33rd Annual Big Time Festival, Upper Delaware NSR is celebrating with its Zane Grey Festival, and Lowell NHP's Folk Festival are in July. Grand Portage NM has its summer Rendezvous Days and Powwow in August, as well as Golden Spike NHS's 37th Annual Railroader's Festival.
    8. Arts in the Parks. Did you know the NPS is home to a number of sites dedicated to the arts? You can visit Art in the Park Week at Homestead NM of America or explore the Indian Arts Showcase at Fort Union Trading Post NHS in August. You can also try your hand at sculpture workshops offered throughout the summer at Saint-Gaudens NHS or Take Part in Art at Weir Farm NHS.
    9. Annual Pony Swim. Head to Assateague Island NS for a weekend on camping, exploring, and the annual pony swim! This year's swim takes place on July 24. Spend a weekend or a week at this national seashore; you and your family will find plenty to do!
    10. Boston-Area Events. Do you love a good scavenger hunt? Boston NHP is challenging you to find out how the Boston Tea Party began with this fun hunt July 2-7. Win a prize for successful completion! Or are you more of a romantic? Minute Man NHP will be presenting Love Letters: The Intimate Correspondence of John & Abigail Adams the first Saturdays in July, August, and September.
