Presidents' Day

Presidents' Day is a federal holiday that commemorates all of our presidents, most significantly Presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. More than 30 National Park Service sites honor the lives of the American presidents. You can learn about the lives of these men and the impact they had on building the nation through these sites.

-John Quincy Adams regularly skinny dipped in the Potomac River.

 

-Martin Van Buren popularized the phrase "OK".

 

-James Buchanan was the only president who never married.

 

-Grover Cleveland had an artificial jaw, which was installed after a piece of his original jaw-that had a cancerous lesion-was removed.

 

-William Howard Taft served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court following his presidential term.

 

-Gerald Ford did some fashion modeling in the 1940's-he was featured on the cover of Cosmopolitan.

 

-Jimmy Carter was the first president born in a hospital.

 

-John Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died on the 4th of July, 1826. James Monroe followed suit in 1831. Calvin Coolidge was the only president to be born on that day.

 

-William Henry Harrison was only president for 31 days, he died of pneumonia.

 

-John Tyler had 15 children.

 

-Gerald Ford held his daughter's high school prom at the White House.
