MWP staff attends annual SMART Conference
Midwest Partnership staff members attended the 2013 Iowa SMART Conference Thursday, May 2, 2013, at the Community Choice Credit Union Convention Center, in spite of the unexpected winter storm.
The Iowa SMART Economic Development Conference is Iowa's premiere economic development conference, Iowa's largest annual conference devoted to economic development. Now in its 28th year, the SMART Conference includes general sessions, workshops and networking opportunities to business and community leaders, elected officials, board members and those involved in economic development across the Midwest to find synergy in moving the Iowa's economy forward. Workshop Topics included "Brain Gain- Rural Counties & Rural Cities", "Growing Your Tourism Opportunities" and many others. This year's luncheon keynote speaker was Bill Rancic, award-winning personality and original winner (2004) of the "The Apprentice" reality TV show. Bill shared his many experiences not only on "The Apprentice," but also as a successful entrepreneur, a best-selling author ("You're Hired: How to Succeed in Business and Life," "Beyond The Lemonade Stand"), a television host/producer ("America Now," "Giuliana and Bill," "Ready for Love") and a restaurateur (Chicago restaurant RPM-Italian chain). The SMART Conference is a public/private partnership co-sponsored by the investor-owned electric and natural gas companies of the Iowa Utility Association (IUA) and the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA).

Lincoln Highway celebrates 100 years
The original founders of the Lincoln Highway envisioned as "coast to coast rock highway" connecting New York and San Francisco, giving travelers an easy cross-country route to travel. Many Iowans were also involved in creating what was known as the "Main Street Across America", a road which avoided larger cities and carried travelers through many small communities.
Carl Fisher assembled in group of businessmen in the early 1900s and on July 1, 1913 the Lincoln Highway Association was created.
The Lincoln Highway crosses Greene County and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Historic bridges and markers dot the roadside as you travel across the county and state.
The old bank building in Grand Junction, known as the Iowa Lincoln Highway Interpretive Center, is home to many pieces of Lincoln Highway history, but the road itself is considered a museum by many, including Bob Augsberger, a Greene County resident who fought the County in 1990 to prevent moving he road and demolishing the historic and original Eureka Bridge in Greene County. The lawsuit ended in 1991 in favor of preserving the bridge and roadway. The Augsbergers, Bob and his wife Joyce, continue to travel coast to coast devoting their lives to preserving the Lincoln Highway by attending conferences and representing Iowa as an historic resource.
