Kings Canyon on Horseback
"In the summer of 2008, my 75-year-old sister and I (at 70) did a pack trip with Rainbow Packers into northern Kings Canyon over Bishop Pass into the Leconte Wilderness, and it was the trip of a lifetime......the valley was stunningly like Yosemite but of course 4000' higher and devoid of people and development.
I struggled a bit with the 12,000' altitude going over the pass, but otherwise the trip was wonderful . "
Thanks to B. B. of Tallahassee, Florida, for sending this National Park memory.

Back Roads Part Deux
As you know if you are a regular reader, I have started taking the "road less travelled." So much more to see, and the driving is definitely more fun.
This past week I took my dad on a backroads adventure through a wonderful part of the Willamette Valley. We saw filbert orchards, vineyards, hop, hay and horseradish fields, and beautiful old farm houses and barns.
We ended up in a town whose main streets had been closed off to traffic so they could hold their annual "drive in," a vintage car show. We hadn't even known about it, so it was a pleasant surprise. There was even a big band adding to the atmosphere by playing music from the 1920's through the 1950's.
