This time of year, we're getting doses, sometimes BIG ones like the early wet snow in the Northeast U.S., of what is to come. We've had the fire going quite a bit these last couple of weeks. For northern hemisphere dwellers, the cold stuff could be on its way.

    turkey

I looked out the window one day and saw this wild turkey perched on the bird bath getting a drink.  It hadn't rained in almost two months, and I was glad we had kept the baths filled for the wildlife. However, I was a little surprised when this large bird didn't tip over the bath.

It was Benjamin Franklin who suggested that the poorly drawn bald eagle looked more like a wild turkey than the noble bird the founding fathers hoped to use as a symbol for the country. Franklin went on to write to his daughter that the wild turkey was a more admirable bird, although a little silly. The eagle is a robber and a scavanger who can be driven off by a king bird which is "no bigger than a sparrow." The turkey, on the other hand, does not hesitate to defend its territory.

 Benjamin Franklin

Geography is often defined as a science that studies the lands,  inhabitants, features and phenomena of  the earth.  Someone who was both an inhabitant and a phenomenon is  quintessential Renaissance Man Benjamin Franklin. Born in Boston in 1706, he moved to Philadelphia when he was 17. His numerous writings and essays dealt with everything from the philosophical to the social, from the scientific to musical. Directly from the Almanack:

1. Tis easy to see, hard to foresee.

2. He that speaks much, is much mistaken.

3. An Egg to day is better than a Hen to-morrow.

4. Wish not so much to live long as to live well.
