October sunset Cedarville, CA sky

It occurred to me that you've got to show the sky to really show the weather. Here in Cedarville, in the northeastern corner of Calif., the sky is always interesting. And as you can see, at sunset last week it was beautiful. The town's radio station KDUP is great.

    Graham auto

Driving north on I-5 near  Yreka, California, I stopped at a gas station to fill up before heading home from Mt. Lassen.

This car pulled up to the pump next to me, and I couldn't help but admire its sleek lines and distinctive front grille or perhaps "shark nose". I asked the gentlemen who were in the car if I could take a photo, and they were most pleased to have me do so. The car is a Graham Supercharger. I wasn't familiar with the Graham name, but evidently the company was founded by two American brothers and a Canadian.  Hence, the link to our map of North America.

    John Steinbeck

When I first read this book back in high school, I was confused by it. I had really liked The Grapes of Wrath, Cannery Row, and Tortilla Flat. I even named my cat Torelli after one of the characters in Tortilla Flat.

Travels with Charley was about Steinbeck's 3 month journey "in Search of America."  He found places that delighted him, but more often he was saddened by the changes that had occurred in the country (for example - losing regional dialect),  and by many of the people he encountered.  The first time I read the book, I was too young to be disappointed by much of anything. That's why I love a good re-read: Something can strike you one way when you're 16 and another when you're...well...older!
