Japanese maple in fall

We're having fall weather which here, means heaven, and the realization that we do have four actual seasons. Took this shot of our tree this morning--just as the sun was hitting it. Wow.

    momotaro

On a visit to the bay area this summer,

I had a chance to follow the Guadalupe River Walk through the 10th most populated city in the country: San Jose. I was amazed at how much of the area was open space, even in the heart of downtown.

Close to Adobe world headquarters was a park with this statue of Momotaro. It represents a Japanese story of a boy found in a peach by an older couple.  After he grew up, he left his parents to fight (and defeat) an ogre on an island, and on the way he befriended a dog, a monkey and a pheasant.

Many of our cities have beautiful parks, interesting architecture and wonderful public art. Take time to enjoy more than just the food and nightlife next time you're in downtown.

    Gabriel Garcia Márquez

Magical Realism is a term used to describe this 1967 novel about seven generations of one family. The major premise is that the patriarch of the family falls asleep by a river and dreams of a city of mirrors, where everything is a reflection of something else.

When he awakes, he decides to build a city right there by the river. He names it Macondo, but it really represents the author's birth country of Columbia. When I read this book, I felt transported to a culture and country about which I know very little. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1982.
