Camping in the Fall |
Last week I got out my trusty Benchmark Atlas of Oregon and followed Highway 62 toward Crater Lake National Park. There are so many campgrounds along the way, and they're almost all nestled in fairly old-growth firs along the Rogue River. We found one called Farewell Bend in the atlas, pitched a new tent (picked up on sale at this time of year), and enjoyed good food and a nice campfire. The next morning we followed a branch road which took us toward the small town of Union Creek. We then hiked down to National Creek Falls. The frog at the beginning of the Journal nicely posed for the photo! |

Carl Hiaasen
Carl Hiaasen writes a column for the Miami Herald as well as novels. Most of them are populated with people who have different approaches to living in Florida. Some seek to develop, others seek to preserve fragile areas like the Everglades. His rather colorful character, the shower-cap-wearing ex-governor, is one of the latter.
