Fall Equinox |
This is a photo of the sunrise directly to the east of us, coming up over Mt. McLoughlin (9495') on the autumnal equinox a few years ago. It helps to have landmarks to mark the four points of the compass or other places of interest. We used to have an elm tree whose trunk hid the setting sun for a couple of days near the summer solstice, but it blew down in a wind storm early this spring. |

Tony Hillerman
The Four Corners area of our country (Utah, Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico) is beautifully described by Tony Hillerman in his series of mysteries revolving around the lives of Navaho Tribal Policemen Jim Chee and Joe Leaphorn.
He makes the reader aware of the huge distances between towns, the mountainous as well as desert terrain, and the culture and tradition that permeates the whole region.
