Take to the Highway |
For some people, Labor Day marks the end of the summer travel season. For others, it's just the beginning. Finally, the campsites and motels have more room, yet the weather is still fairly predictable. Fall is (almost) in the air. Keep an eye out for migrating birds and changing leaves. On a trip to Klamath Falls in Oregon last year, we were surprised at how early the beautiful stands of aspen trees began to show their brilliant yellow leaf color. Walden; or, Life in the Woods |

Henry David Thoreau
If you'd enjoy a book combining natural history, philosophy, personal observations, and Yankee austerity, Walden is the book for you. Published in 1854, it is a record of Thoreau's life in the woods near Concord during the previous two years. Among other things,he discusses his crops, the weather, the solitude, his thoughts about the land, the wildlife and visits from his friends.
I had a chance to visit Walden Pond about ten years ago. There is a cabin and a nice trail around the pond, all preserved and supported by the Thoreau Society's Friends of Walden Pond. They have a fantastic collection of photographs, color and black and white, dating back many years.
