The Cumberland Gap is a natural feature through the Appalachian Mountains, and has been used by Native Americans, pioneers and settlers for many years. It is located at the juncture of Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia. An interesting feature of this opening is the 3 mile wide meteorite impact crater: Middlesboro Crater. The meandering northern border is formed by the Ohio River as it travels southwest to join the Mississippi. |

John McPhee
Karen says: "I studied road cuts and outcrops as a kid.I was probably doomed to be a geologist from the beginning."
John McPhee's story of the history of the earth as exposed along road cuts of I-80 is a wonderful way to journey across the country learning about our portion of the planet.
Our map of Nevada exemplifies what McPhee calls the "tectonic, active, spreading, mountain-building world".
