Canon Beach, Oregon |
We have some incredible rock formations along the coast in Oregon. If you've got an Oregon Benchmark atlas, you can easily find some great places to explore, camp, and sight-see. At the right is 235' Haystack Rock in Canon Beach. It is a small part of one of the largest flood basalts ever on earth. For 10-15 million years, there was a continuous lava flow which created the Columbia plateau covering parts of Oregon, Idaho, and Washington. Some of these rocks are now part of a wildlife refuge which was set up to protect intertidal animals like crabs, limpets and starfish, and to provide a nesting spot for sea birds like puffins and terns. |

Life on the Mississippi |

Mark Twain
I was a traveler! A word never had tasted so good in my mouth before.
Samuel L. Clemons's journey down the Mississippi River as a cub pilot was published in 1883. He grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, but this literary journey began near St. Louis, where the Missouri joins the Mississippi.
I had a friend in 4th grade who made a passionate argument for the Missouri River to be the main river, and the Mississippi River to be a tributary. I thought it was amazing that someone my own age could have such a mature thought! And, in retrospect, how nice that the teacher encouraged him. That's the way we learn to think and discover.
