 Today's question is:

What year did California surpass New York to become the most populous state in the U.S.?

Extra credit: How far below sea level is Death Valley, the lowest point in the United States?

Oil Rig in La Habra,California

From the late 1940's thru the mid 1950's, my father worked in the oil fields in Southern California. He was a "rough neck". Twice during that time he was working on oil rigs that experienced a blow out.

The accompanying photo is of one of the rigs that blew in La Habra, California. As a young boy, the most impressive part of these events was seeing my father come home covered with sand, mud and oil.

Last call for photos taken along Route 66! We hope to have the photo album sometime soon. We'll let you know.

Route 66 - California

        Raven Map of California

From Needles, just over the border from Arizona, to the end of the Santa Monica Pier on the Pacific Ocean, the drive through California will amaze you.  After crossing the Colorado River, you'll drive about 135 miles through the Mojave Desert to Barsow. Old Route 66 didn't even have diners or gas stations along this road!

You'll travel through mountains, military bases, National Forests, and all the cities and towns between Barstow and Los Angeles before reaching the end of the journey on Route 66.  It's been a great one, too.  Thanks for coming along!
