The Santa Fe Railway broke ground in 1859 and continued on the rails until 1996.  At first, the train route didn't go all the way through to Santa Fe due to the terrain around the city.

The song On the Atchison, Topeka, and the Santa Fe, sung by Judy Garland in the 1946 musical The Harvey Girls, won an Acadamy Award for the best original song..
