Levy Park Renovation
Overlook Structure Coming Next Week

Forming Work on the Pavilion Roof
Work this week at Levy Park focused on the forming work for the concrete pavilion roof structure. This curved, concrete roof frame will accept over 200 cubic yards of concrete in the next two weeks.

Once complete, the pavilion will house performances and interactive programs of all sizes in Levy Park from a full symphony to a family movie night. The pavilion structure will also house public restroom facilities for the park and provide a backdrop for programming in the central children's area.

Work also continued on the grading and decking around the southern rain garden in the park and on the raised berms in the dog park. Next week, crews intend to begin installation of the children's overlook structure, a ramped set of observation decks that will meander through the canopies of several historic oak trees allowing children the chance to explore the park from a different perspective.

Upper Kirby Construction
No Weekend Work at Bissonnet and Kirby
Westheimer Reconstruction: Kirby to Shepherd
Final Back of Curb Work Being Installed

In addition to continued restoration work behind the curb on Westheimer this week, crews began milling and street repair/resurfacing work on Persa and Peckham this week. Milling work was completed on Wednesday and over the coming week, workers will complete spot repair on subgrade failures and curb sections and begin asphalting the two roadways.

Center Point Energy has confirmed that they intend to remove the overhead utility poles by the end of July, at which point, crews will be able to finalize the sidewalk and paver sections behind the curb.

Center Point Energy's street light division still needs to set street lights along the roadway. Foundations and power has been available for this work since February and the construction team is working to get Center Point to schedule this work as soon as possible.

Work getting the permanent signals has been delayed at the intersection due to an engineering oversight that resulted in the signal arms being too short. The design team is working with the contractor on the most expedient solution to the issue so that the temporary signals can be removed and permanent signals energized.

AT&T has been working on a vault adjustment underground at the crosswalk as well. It appears after some exploration that the AT&T work did not properly set base material around the vault and restoration at this point would result in the pavers at the crosswalk sinking over time. Reytec will work over the next two weeks to place a proper concrete base around the vault and complete final restoration of the crosswalk.

Look for further updates next week.

Bissonnet Reconstruction: Kirby to Buffalo Speedway

Work on Bissonnet continued this week with 48-inch storm sewer installation east of the Kirby intersection. Approximately 200 linear feet of storm sewer has been placed east of Kirby and crews anticipate completing installation all the way to Dincans Street this week.

Pavement preparation has begun on the north side of the street just west of Kirby and will be poured shortly. Crews also began demolition on the north side of the street between Dincans and Bissonnet. Storm sewer work will likely begin here next week.

The project will include a complete concrete road reconstruction with improvements to water, sanitary and storm facilities as well as the Upper Kirby Management District's installation of a sorely needed pedestrian-oriented streetscape. As you can see in the photos above, Bissonnet has no pedestrians because pedestrian facilities are either inadequate or absent all together. It is anticipated that the project will take approximately one year to complete.

Look for further updates as this schedule is finalized.

Westheimer Reconstruction: Kirby to Buffalo Speedway

Roadway reconstruction, storm drainage improvements and pedestrian amenities will continue west of Kirby later this year. The project to bid in July and construction should start here around the late August, early September time frame. I

Look for further updates as this schedule is finalized.

Shepherd Reconstruction: Westheimer to US 59

The Upper Kirby District is preparing to begin design on the drainage and pavement improvements project on Shepherd between Westheimer and US 59 over the next several months. This construction will provide storm drainage improvement, new pavement, utility relocation and complete streetscape and pedestrian improvements.

Construction will likely follow Westheimer work in the 2017/2018 time frame.
