Upper Kirby Construction
Progress Continues on Westheimer

Westheimer Reconstruction: Kirby to Shepherd

While several AT&T underground conflicts are still being negotiated on Westheimer, work has moved well over the past week.

New pavement has been completed at both the Greenbriar and Persa intersections and demolition along the south side of the street has progressed all the way to Kirby. New pavement has also been set all the way to Westgate and pavement preparation is currently taking place west to Kirby Drive. Look for intersection pavement installation to continue over the next week at Westheimer and Shepherd. The western section of the intersection is currently all that remains. Also underway this week will be pedestrian light foundation work on the south side of the roadway and framing for sidewalk installation between Shepherd and Greenbriar.

The AT&T underground fiber-optic facility referenced above runs parallel to Westheimer along the southern curbside lane. Crews have to cross this line with storm inlet lead lines connecting inlets on the southern curb with the storm sewer trunk on the north side of the street. These crossings at non-signalized intersections will require unplanned junction box installation that delayed pavement work through the intersections. As one crew works to get around the conflict at approximately seven intersections west of Peckham, pavement between the intersections is moving forward. This will cause some delay in the final completion thought the total impact is not known at this time.

Look for further updates as the project progresses.

Bissonnet Reconstruction: Kirby to Buffalo Speedway

Utility duct banks have been constructed on Bissonnet between Kirby and Buffalo Speedway and are awaiting utility transfers. Roadwork is anticipated to begin in the first quarter of 2016.

Look for further updates as this project is finalized.

Shepherd Reconstruction: Westheimer to US 59

The Upper Kirby District is preparing to begin design on the drainage and pavement improvements project on Shepherd between Westheimer and US 59 over the next several months. This construction will provide storm drainage improvement, new pavement, utility relocation and complete streetscape and pedestrian improvements.

Construction will likely follow Westheimer work in the 2017/2018 time frame.

Levy Park Renovation

Future Levy Park Performance Pavilion
Work continued this week with concrete placement along the northern access road for the park. Roadway pavement is now in between Eastside and Wakeforest.

The new north access park road will provide additional street parking for the park as well as additional access and cross-flow between Eastside and Wakeforest. Park staff will have the ability to close the road for markets, festivals and other regular and seasonal events.

Utility work also continued throughout the project with installation of electrical conduit and storm and sanitary sewer pipe.

Park-wide utility improvements will provide for functional and decorative lighting, convenience outlets for cell phone and laptop charging, public WiFi, public and family restroom facilities and future food and beverage amenities.

Crews also began excavation activities for the new performance pavilion and restroom facilities in the park. Once complete, this structure will provide performance space for a variety of programming from outdoor movie nights to full orchestral performances.

You can follow construction progress live 24/7 via the project's online webcam by clicking here

The renovation will entail an improved community garden, expanded dog park facilities, an event lawn and performance pavilion, one-of-a-kind children's play area, an activity lawn with outdoor games, interactive water, food and drink and curated, year-round programming.

There will be no public access to the park during construction, however, the active dog walking community in Levy Park will still have access to the temporary dog run facilities as the permanent improvements are constructed.
