Upper Kirby Construction
Rain and AT&T Conflict Slow Progress Somewhat

Westheimer Reconstruction: Kirby to Shepherd

While concrete work continues to move smoothly on Westheimer, several AT&T underground conflicts and a rainy weekend has slowed work somewhat.

The AT&T underground fiber-optic facility in question runs parallel to Westheimer along the southern curbside lane. Crews have to cross this line with storm inlet lead lines connecting inlets on the southern curb with the storm sewer trunk on the north side of the street. These crossings at non-signalized intersections will require unplanned junction box installation that delayed pavement work through the intersections. As one crew works to get around the conflict at approximately seven intersections west of Peckham, pavement between the intersections is moving forward. This will cause some delay in the final completion thought the total impact is not known at this time.

New pavement is down through Greenbriar and demolition has taken place west all the way to Argonne. Pavement preparation has begun between Greenbriar and Westgate and crews expect to complete at least one pour through this section this week. Crews will also be using a fast-drying concrete in the intersection of Shepherd and Westheimer this week beginning on the northwest corner of the intersection.

Next week crews will continue with demolition of the southern lane between Argonne and Kirby and will continue with pavement preparation between Westgate and Revere. Sidewalk and brick paver work will continue along the north side of the street next week as well.

Look for further updates as the project progresses.

Bissonnet Reconstruction: Kirby to Buffalo Speedway

Utility duct banks have been constructed on Bissonnet between Kirby and Buffalo Speedway and are awaiting utility transfers. Roadwork is anticipated to begin in the first quarter of 2016.

Look for further updates as this project is finalized.

Shepherd Reconstruction: Westheimer to US 59

The Upper Kirby District is preparing to begin design on the drainage and pavement improvements project on Shepherd between Westheimer and US 59 over the next several months. This construction will provide storm drainage improvement, new pavement, utility relocation and complete streetscape and pedestrian improvements.

Construction will likely follow Westheimer work in the 2017/2018 time frame.

Levy Park Renovation

Future Levy Park Performance Pavilion
Work continued this week with concrete placement and framing along the northern access road for the park.

Utility work also began throughout the project with installation of electrical conduit and storm and sanitary sewer pipe.

The new north access park road will provide additional street parking for the park as well as additional access and cross-flow between Eastside and Wakeforest. Park staff will have the ability to close the road for markets, festivals and other regular and seasonal events.

Parkwide utility improvements will provide for functional and decorative lighting, convenience outlets for cell phone and laptop charging, public WiFi, public and family restroom facilities and future food and beverage amenities.

You can follow construction progress live 24/7 via the project's online webcam by clicking here

The renovation will entail an improved community garden, expanded dog park facilities, an event lawn and performance pavilion, one-of-a-kind children's play area, an activity lawn with outdoor games, interactive water, food and drink and curated, year-round programming.

Temporary Dog Park Will Remain Open During Construction
There will be no public access to the park during construction, however, the active dog walking community in Levy Park will still have access to the temporary dog run facilities as the permanent improvements are constructed.
