Upper Kirby Construction
Crews Moving Fast on Westheimer Work

Westheimer Reconstruction: Kirby to Shepherd
Concrete Framing East of Shepherd

Good weather and available concrete have made for productive conditions on Westheimer this week.

Crews have been able to pour the final remaining section east of Shepherd adjacent to Huldy and, as of this morning, have also poured the east side of the Shepherd intersection extending north of Westheimer alongside the Exxon station. Once cured, crews will shift northbound traffic on Shepherd onto the east side of the intersection and can pour the center section of Shepherd north of Westheimer. Concurrently, crews are prepping to complete remaining storm connections on the west side of the Shepherd intersection and will be doing so during overnight hours to minimize construction impact on traffic and improve safety. It is likely that the intersection could be completely open to traffic in the next three weeks.

Concurrently, crews are pulling out old concrete on the south side of Westheimer, moving west from Shepherd and following behind with pavement preparation crews. As the roadway is removed, crews are completing storm sewer inlet tie-ins and manholes so that concrete crews can follow close behind. As concrete is poured and cures, crews will begin opening up the eastbound lanes in sections moving west from Shepherd toward Kirby.

Work will also continue next week behind the curb on the north side of the intersection with final touches to the sidewalk and side-street brick crosswalk work.

Bissonnet Reconstruction: Kirby to Buffalo Speedway

Utility duct banks have been constructed on Bissonnet between Kirby and Buffalo Speedway and are awaiting utility transfers. Roadwork is anticipated to begin in the first quarter of 2016.

Look for further updates as this project is finalized.

Shepherd Reconstruction: Westheimer to US 59

The Upper Kirby District is preparing to begin design on the drainage and pavement improvements project on Shepherd between Westheimer and US 59 over the next several months. This construction will provide storm drainage improvement, new pavement, utility relocation and complete streetscape and pedestrian improvements.

Construction will likely follow Westheimer work in the 2017/2018 time frame.

Levy Park Renovation

Future Levy Park Performance Pavilion
Work continued this week along the north side of the park focusing on utility infrastructure associated with the northern park road.

Crews continued installation of the 42-inch storm sewer pipe from the access road onto Eastside St. as well as with an 8-inch sanitary pipe moving west from Wakeforest toward Eastside. They also began laying electrical conduit this week and began preparation for concrete installation on the north access road.

Next week crews should continue with utility work and will begin setting pavement forms for new concrete.

The new north access park road will provide additional street parking for the park as well as additional access and cross-flow between Eastside and Wakeforest. Park staff will have the ability to close the road for markets, festivals and other regular and seasonal events.

You can follow construction progress live 24/7 via the project's online webcam by clicking here

The renovation will entail an improved community garden, expanded dog park facilities, an event lawn and performance pavilion, one-of-a-kind children's play area, an activity lawn with outdoor games, interactive water, food and drink and curated, year-round programming.

Temporary Dog Park Will Remain Open During Construction
There will be no public access to the park during construction, however, the active dog walking community in Levy Park will still have access to the temporary dog run facilities as the permanent improvements are constructed.
