Westheimer Work Focused on Shepherd Intersection

Westheimer Reconstruction: Kirby to Shepherd
Sidewalk Work Continues

Traffic is now on the new pavement along the center of Westheimer between Huldy (east of Shepherd) and Westgate. The remaining pavement to Kirby has been poured and should be opening to traffic shortly. At that point, motorists should expect one lane in both directions on the north side of Westheimer for the length of the project.

Crews are now working on the subgrade work and pavement preparation on the south side of Westheimer from Huldy into the Shepherd intersection. This work will allow traffic shifts within the Shepherd/Westheimer intersection so that final intersection storm connections can occur on the southbound lanes of Shepherd.

Once work on the Westheimer lanes on the south side of the roadway east of Shepherd have been completed, crews will shift northbound traffic to the curbside lane of Shepherd and begin excavation of the Center portion of Shepherd north of Westheimer. Once that section is complete, crews will be able to shift southbound traffic to the center of Shepherd and begin storm work in the west side of the intersection. With good weather, the Westheimer pavement east of Shepherd, the Shepherd pavement north of Westheimer and the storm connections could be done in the next two to three weeks.

Concurrently, crews will begin removing pavement along the south side of Westheimer between Kirby and Shepherd and making final north south storm connections to inlets on the south side of the street. Upon completion of the storm work in the intersection, paving of the intersection and  the south lanes of Westheimer will be all that remains. The goal is to complete all main lane work in November.

Bissonnet Reconstruction: Kirby to Buffalo Speedway

Utility duct banks have been constructed on Bissonnet between Kirby and Buffalo Speedway and are awaiting utility transfers. Roadwork is anticipated to begin in the first quarter of 2016.

Look for further updates as this project is finalized.

Shepherd Reconstruction: Westheimer to US 59

The Upper Kirby District is preparing to begin design on the drainage and pavement improvements project on Shepherd between Westheimer and US 59 over the next several months. This construction will provide storm drainage improvement, new pavement, utility relocation and complete streetscape and pedestrian improvements.

Construction will likely follow Westheimer work in the 2017/2018 time frame.

Levy Park Renovation
Large Live Oak Relocated This Week

Work continued this week along the north side of the park focusing on utility infrastructure associated with the northern park road.

Workers relocated a large live oak that was in conflict with the roadway from the Eastside frontage on the north side of the park to the southwest side of the new park.

The new north access park road will provide additional street parking for the park as well as additional access and cross-flow between Eastside and Wakeforest. Park staff will have the ability to close the road for markets, festivals and other regular and seasonal events.

You can follow construction progress live 24/7 via the project's online webcam by clicking here

The renovation will entail an improved community garden, expanded dog park facilities, an event lawn and performance pavilion, one-of-a-kind children's play area, an activity lawn with outdoor games, interactive water, food and drink and curated, year-round programming.

Temporary Dog Park Will Remain Open During Construction
There will be no public access to the park during construction, however, the active dog walking community in Levy Park will still have access to the temporary dog run facilities as the permanent improvements are constructed.
