West Alabama Reconstruction
Public Meeting Tonight

Livable Centers Workshop 2010
The City of Houston's District C Council Office and Public Works and Engineering Department are hosting a public meeting tonight from 6 pm to 8 pm at St. Stephens Church, (1805 W. Alabama St., 77098) to discuss the reconstruction of West Alabama between Weslayan and Almeda Road.

The City is currently in design on the first segment between Weslayan and Buffalo Speedway with construction slated to begin sometime next year. The Upper Kirby District will be managing the reconstruction along Alabama between Buffalo Speedway and Shepherd. The City of Houston will also construct the segment between Shepherd and Spur 527 and Midtown will manage the project from there east.

The focus of the meeting tonight is to gather input on the corridor as a whole and provide project detail specific to the first segment between Weslayan and Buffalo Speedway. As no other segment has begun design, implementation schedules for the remainder of the corridor are not finalized and additional public meetings will be held segment by segment as those projects progress.

Concrete Work Continues on Westheimer

Westheimer Reconstruction: Kirby to Shepherd
Concrete Work at Shepherd/Westheimer Intersection

Crews were able to complete pavement placement east of Shepherd this week along the northern-most lanes. They were also able to complete concrete work on the east side of Shepherd to tie the intersection work into the City contractor's pavement further north.

Concrete was also placed at the northeast corner of the Shepherd Westheimer intersection. As the City's contractor clears out of areas of the intersection, Upper Kirby contractors are standing ready to jump in and pave as space becomes available.

Reytec has continued to take advantage of the dry weather and have made significant progress on concrete placement in a short amount of time. Pavement work along the center of the roadway has been completed between Shepherd and Peckham. This week, crews hope to complete concrete work between Kingston and Dickey and subgrade work all the way to Argonne. It is expected that sidewalk placement on the north side of Westheimer will begin this week as well.

Once the Center of the roadway is complete, work will begin on the south side of Westheimer at Shepherd and aim to get work to Greenbriar as quickly as possible. At the current pace, crews hope to have the roadway pavement completed this fall.

Levy Park Renovation

View From New Wakeforest Frontage
Initial demolition work has begun in small sections of Levy Park this week. While the site is not completely closed to the public yet, perimeter fencing is expected to be completed in the next day or so and the park will not be accessible to the public for the next year of construction.

You can, however, follow the construction progress live 24/7 via the project's online webcam by clicking here

The renovation will entail an improved community garden, expanded dog park facilities, an event lawn and performance pavilion, one-of-a-kind children's play area, an activity lawn with outdoor games, interactive water, food and drink and curated, year-round programming.
Temporary Dog Park Will Remain Open During Construction
There will be no public access to the park during construction, however, the active dog walking community in Levy Park will still have access to the temporary dog run facilities as the permanent improvements are constructed.
