Upper Kirby Update

  July 25, 2014
Upper Kirby Construction
Westheimer Utility Work Kirby to Buffalo
Rain Continues to Slow Progress

Westheimer

Paving, Drainage and  Streetscape
Improvements

Project:

Work on Westheimer has met with more rainy conditions this week slowing down progress some. Duct work from Bammel to Ferndale is complete and restoration is underway, however, the roadway will not be ready for full traffic access here until Monday.

Efforts next week will focus on duct installation between Virginia and Lake. This final stretch of improvement is expected to last approximately two weeks. Duct installation on Virginia south of Westheimer is now complete and CenterPoint has since set the poles necessary for the new underground service to return overhead. Crews will have to come back to this area following completion of work on Westheimer to make the final run up to the new poles and restore the roadway.

The contract duration on this project is 120 days putting completion somewhere around July 2014. Weather permitting, roadway construction between Kirby and Shepherd should be able to begin immediately following utility completion west of Kirby.

CenterPoint and the telecommunications companies will follow behind duct bank construction reconnecting services underground. The duration of this reconnection work will be up to the utility providers though 45 to 90 days is typical. Traffic impact during this work is negligible.

Once the utilities have been removed and the lines brought underground west of Kirby, Upper Kirby will move forward with drainage and underground infrastructure improvements followed by complete repaving of the roadway. The project will also entail the installation of a pedestrian-oriented streetscape similar to the treatment provided on the recent Kirby Drive and Buffalo Speedway projects. This work will first be completed between Shepherd and Kirby followed by an identical scope of work between Kirby and Buffalo Speedway.

Roadway reconstruction is anticipated to last approximately 300 calendar days. Drainage improvement and roadway reconstruction between Kirby and Buffalo will immediately follow and will have a similar approximate duration.

TxDOT Construction
Kirby Exit Outbound to Close July 28
Weslayan Intersection Work Continues

US 59 Frontage Road Reconstruction

Intersection work at Weslayan continued this week on the TxDOT reconstruction of the frontage lanes, uturns and intersection underpasses between 610 and Shepherd.

The first phase of this work entails demolition and reconstruction of the four right-turn quadrants on the outside lanes of Weslayan and the feeder road in both directions. Work will likely continue here for at least another two weeks before the underpass is reconstructed. Work on the underpass will take place in halves necessitating that one direction on Weslayan be detoured along the frontage road and u-turned to continue along Weslayan. Details will be provided once this work is confirmed.

Work on the inside lanes both inbound and outbound between Kirby and Buffalo Speedway is nearly complete. The outbound section between Kirby and Buffalo opened on July 20th and the inbound on ramp is expected to be complete and open July 28th.

After the 28th, crews will close the Kirby on ramp inbound between Kirby and Greenbriar as well as the outbound Kirby exit. Work here will take approximately three weeks to complete.

Work on the Greenbriar intersection is likely to begin around the 30th of July, weather permitting. Please look for details as the schedule is finalized.

Look for weekly updates as this project progresses.
