SANTA PAULA USD RECEIVES HOLLAND'S OPUS GRANT

 California Consulting is pleased to announce Santa Paula Unified School District received the Mr. Holland's Opus Award for $18,095. This award will provide:

 Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization[1] established in 1996 by Michael Kamen, the composer for the motion picture Mr. Holland's Opus.[2] 

According to the Foundation's website, "MHOF donates musical instruments to music programs where students have access to a music curriculum but lack the resources and support base to adequately keep up with equipment loss due to attrition, depreciation and wear over time. An infusion of instruments and repairs enables more students to participate and experience a quality music education." The stated goal of MHOF is to "help children achieve their greatest potential and to close the gap that exists in underserved communities."

 

 

NEWS FROM LOS ANGELES COUNTY BUSINESS FEDERATION

 

OBAMA ANNOUNCES MONIES RELEASED FOR COMPETIVE NEW MANUFACTURING AND APPRENTICESHIP GRANTS

 President Obama met with industry leaders at the Business Roundtable quarterly meeting and highlighted the importance of trade agreements and his willingness to work with Congress to secure Trade Promotion Authority. The President also underscored the importance of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a 12-nation trade deal in the Asia Pacific that aims to level the playing field for companies to compete fairly for sales of their goods and services.

 During the meeting, President Obama made the following exciting announcements:


 

 $290 Million in Public-Private Investment Through Two New Manufacturing Innovation Hub Competitions: President Obama will launch two new competitions for manufacturing innovation institutes today-one in smart manufacturing at the Department of Energy and one in flexible hybrid electronics at the Department of Defense. Each institute will receive $70 million or more of federal investment to be matched by at least $70 million from the private sector for a total of more than $290 million in new investment.


 

 Launching the $100 Million American Apprenticeship Grants Competition: The President will also announce that the Department of Labor is opening a competition to spur partnerships between employers, labor, training providers, and local governments to expand apprenticeships into high-growth fields like advanced manufacturing and healthcare and scale models that work. Apprenticeships are a proven path to the middle-class, as 87 percent of apprentices are employed after completing their programs with an average starting wage of over $50,000.

CALIFORNIA CONSULTING AT UCLA

 

December 2, 2014 -California Consulting, LLC Owner Steve Samuelian participated as the keynote presenter at a Grant Writing workshop hosted by the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs. The workshop was held on the UCLA campus in Westwood on Tuesday evening December 2, 2014 and was attended by a large group of students from the Masters Program at UCLA Luskin. The UCLA Luskin Career Center hosted the workshop. Other presenters at the workshop included California Consulting Senior Project Managers Cedar Landsman and Deborah Helt. Both Cedar and Deborah have written several successful federal and state applications for California Consulting clients. Samuelian, presented an overview of federal, state, and private foundation applications while Helt and Landsman discussed the components of a successful application including narratives, budgets, and other key issues. Thank you to UCLA Luskin for the kind invitation! California Consulting was honored to participate in this exciting workshop.

CITY OF GLENDALE

 

Glendale /ˈɡlɛndl/ is a city in Los Angeles CountyCalifornia, United States. The 2013 estimates show that the population was 196,021 [6] making it the third largest city in Los Angeles County and the 22nd largest city in the state of California.

 

Glendale lies at the eastern end of the San Fernando Valley, bisected by the Verdugo Mountains, and is a suburb in the Greater Los Angeles Area. The city is bordered to the northwest by the Sun Valley and Tujunga neighborhoods of Los Angeles; to the northeast by La Caņada Flintridge and the unincorporated area of La Crescenta; to the west by Burbank and Griffith Park; to the east by Eagle Rock and Pasadena; to the south by the Atwater Village neighborhood of Los Angeles; and to the southeast by Glassell Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. CALIFORNIA CONSULTING TEAM MEMBER SPOTLIGHT:

Dr. John Walkup

Dr. John Walkup is California Consulting's Senior Education Consultant. Trained as a professional technical writer, John has authored a wide range of successful grant proposals. Focusing most of his efforts on school-related projects, over the last four years, John has helped California public agencies retrieve over $18 million in grant funding.

John has taught physics at the high school level and mathematics, multimedia arts, and English at university level. His expertise spans such topics as STEM learning, English Learners, curriculum development, classroom observation, professional development, standards alignment, and curricular rigor.

In 2007, he co-developed the concept of cognitive rigor and the Cognitive Rigor Matrix (also called the Hess Matrix, now used nationally to gage the quality of curricular content. In 2008, he led the two largest studies of curricular rigor every performed in this country.

John earned his Doctor of Philosophy studying theoretical physics at the University of Oklahoma.

GREG PETTIS SCAG Economic Recovery and Job Creation Summit

Greg Pettis, Senior Consultant for Business Development, California Consulting, attended the Southern California Association of Government's (SCAG) 5th annual Economic Recovery and Job Creation Summit on December 4, 2014 in downtown Los Angeles. Many elected officials and community leaders attended the event. Congratulations to SCAG for a successful and informative summit.

 

 
Immediate Opening for an Experienced Grant Writer
 

California Consulting has an immediate opening for an experienced Grant Writer for the Montebello office. Detailed job description is as follows:

 

1. Primary responsibilities include preparation of proposals and grant applications.

2. Duties include responsible, professional and administrative work in researching, identifying, developing and responding to public and private grant opportunities based on client's needs.

3. Conduct through needs assessment with clients through in person meetings, phone conversations and email. Gather information from clients to facilitate grasping the concept of a project or program for which funding is sought as defined by the client.

4. Acquire and maintain sound knowledge and understanding of the client, and use that knowledge and understanding to better comprehend all projects and programs for which grants will be sought and to recommend the seeking of grants.

5. Research grant-making organizations and analyze them to identify likely funding sources for specific projects and programs based on client needs.

6. Compile, write, and edit all grant applications exhibiting strong expository writing skills and a high-level command of grammar and spelling.

7. Review the budget of a project or program for which funding is sought and make recommendations to the client on how to better present it to grant-making organizations.

8. Develop individual grant proposals in accordance with each grant-making organization's preferences and follow exactly each grant-making organization's guidelines.

9. Keep in contact with grant-making organizations during their review of a submitted grant application in order to be able to supply additional supportive material.

10. Manage the process of supplying progress reports when required by a grant-making organization that has funded a project or program.

11. Responsible for administration and completion of all required post-award reporting, compliance and evaluation as needed.

12. Will work under direction of the Regional Grant Manager.

13. Required to submit weekly written reports to the Regional Grant Manager and State Grant Manager on all projects with a conference call twice monthly with Regional Grant Manager to review projects, clients and accounts.

14. Limited travel is required.

15. 3 years previous grant writing experience required.

16. Salary commensurate with experience.

CDE: California State Preschool Program Expansion FY 2014-15

The intent of this RFA is to expand full-day/full-year CSPP services statewide. To expand CSPP services this RFA funding opportunity is available to existing CSPP contracted agencies, to existing contracted agencies that do not have a CSPP contract, or to new agencies without EESD program contracts.  These funds are intended to increase the availability of CSPP services to eligible children. In accordance with existing law, priority will be given to applicant agencies that will be serving the highest percentage of 4-year-old children.

 

CDE: California Career Pathways Consortium Development Grant

State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB): Drought Response Outreach Program for Schools (DROPS)

 DROPS is focused on projects that reduce storm water pollution and provide multiple benefits including water conservation, water supply augmentation, energy savings, increased awareness of water resource sustainability, and reduced dry weather runoff. US Soccer Foundation: Safe Places to Play Grants

Safe Places to Play grants are available in four categories: Synthetic Turf, Lighting, Irrigation, and Sport Court. Multi-sport field projects are eligible for funding, but such fields must be used a majority of the time for soccer. Multi-field projects are also eligible. All Safe Places to Play grants (except for Irrigation) can be awarded for either indoor or outdoor field projects. Safe Places to Play grantees have 12 months from the date of the award announcement to use their funding. Applicants must submit an LOI describing basics of the project prior to being approved to submit a full application for funding.

President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities: National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Awards

CDE: Education for Homeless Children and Youth

National Fish and Wildlife Foundation: Five Star and Urban Waters Restoration Grant Program

The Five Star and Urban Waters Restoration Grant Program, an initiative of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, seeks to develop community capacity to sustain local natural resources for future generations. Support is provided to local partnerships throughout the United States for wetland, riparian, forest, and coastal habitat restoration; urban wildlife conservation; and storm water management. (Grants for this program are available nationwide, but additional funding is available for specific geographic priorities.) Funded projects should focus on water quality, watersheds, and the habitats they support. Partnerships should include at least five organizations (nonprofit organizations, government agencies, educational institutions, businesses, etc.) that contribute to project success.

CDE: After School Education & Safety (ASES) Grant Program

The After School Education and Safety (ASES) Program is the result of the 2002 voter-approved initiative, Proposition 49. These programs are created through partnerships between schools and local community resources to provide literacy, academic enrichment and safe, constructive alternatives for students in kindergarten through ninth grade. Funding is designed to: (1) maintain existing before and after school program funding; and (2) provide eligibility to all elementary and middle schools that submit quality applications throughout California. The Renewal application is for existing grant recipients who wish to continue funding at existing levels. The Universal application is for new applicants and for existing grant recipients who wish to increase funding. Approximately $10 million in funding is available for ASES Universal grants. The remaining funds are obligated for on-going grants funded via the Renewal application.

 

CDE Summer Food Service Program (Allocation)

Deadline: June 1, 2015

Amount: Varies. Reimbursement based on the number and types of meals served multiplied by the operational and administrative rate.

Funding provides reimbursement for meals served to children who are on school vacation in areas where 50 percent of the children qualify for free or reduced-price school meals. Camp sites may receive reimbursement for serving meals to children who are income eligible. Non-school agencies may be reimbursed for snacks in afterschool settings. Summer sites must be established to serve all children in the community while on school vacation and not enrolled for day care. Meals must be served to all children at the same time. Sponsoring agencies serving snacks after school, must serve meals during summer vacation. Application results are provided within 30 days.

 

CDE Microsoft Education Technology K-12 Voucher Program

This is a new round of funding for the Microsoft Education Technology K-12 Voucher Program which is intended to assist districts with implementation and support of their state-approved district technology plans. The vouchers can be redeemed for a variety of goods and services related to technology, including any computer platform that the school or district specifies. The vouchers will be in the form of 50 percent General Purpose Vouchers and 50 percent Specific Category Software Vouchers.

 

CDE Child and Adult Food Care Program (Allocation)

Deadline: Applications or other data may be submitted at any time during the fiscal year.

Amount: Agencies are reimbursed for the number and types of meals served according to the participant's household eligibility for free, reduced-price, or base rate meals.

The Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) is a state and federally funded program that provides funding to licensed child care centers, adult day care centers, and organizations that sponsor day care homes to ensure participants receive nutritionally adequate meals and snacks while in care. Funding is also available for meals and snacks at emergency shelters and afterschool programs.

After their training is complete, teachers receive a donation of curricula, instruments and other resources so that they can launch Modern Band music programming for students at their schools.

 

San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District (SJVAPCD) Public Benefit Program New Alternative Fuel Vehicle Purchase Grant

Video Insight Security Grant

Video Insight has developed the School Security Grant to help schools that lack funds implement a video surveillance solution and to give back to these communities in need. Beginning in January 2014 - and for each month throughout the year - a school or college will be chosen to receive the software and equipment necessary to implement a video surveillance solution. Each Video Insight School Security Grant recipient will receive the following equipment: 48 Video Insight Video Management Software (VMS) licenses; 16 IP video surveillance cameras; 1 video encoder; 10 years of the Video Insight Software Upgrade Program (SUP).  Applications are completed online.

The Urban Streams Restoration Program (USRP) provides grants to local communities for projects to reduce flooding and erosion and associated property damages; restore, enhance, or protect the natural ecological values of streams; and promote community involvement, education, and stewardship. Since 1985, the program has provided over 240 grants ranging from $1,000 to $1 million to communities throughout California. The projects have included stream cleanups, bank stabilization projects, re-vegetation efforts, re-contouring of channels to improve floodplain function and occasional acquisition of strategic floodplain properties or easements.

  6. Pedestrian Improvements: Provides capital funds for the construction of projects that improve the pedestrian environment in order to promote walking as a viable form of transportation.

The Five Star and Urban Waters Restoration Grant Program, an initiative of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, seeks to develop community capacity to sustain local natural resources for future generations. Support is provided to local partnerships throughout the United States for wetland, riparian, forest, and coastal habitat restoration; urban wildlife conservation; and storm water management. (Grants for this program are available nationwide, but additional funding is available for specific geographic priorities.) Funded projects should focus on water quality, watersheds, and the habitats they support. Partnerships should include at least five organizations (nonprofit organizations, government agencies, educational institutions, businesses, etc.) that contribute to project success.
