Megan Moran: Surviving the Holidays

The holidays are coming, bringing friends, family and FOOD! Let Megan Moran give you some good tips on getting through the holiday season in a healthy way by making smart choices when it comes to meals. You can enjoy the holidays and the festive food without going overboard.
Megan Moran is a board certified registered dietitian (RD) and diabetes educator (CDE). Her goal as an educator and counselor is to help people prevent or manage the onset of obesity.

John Loeb Lecture:
The Lindbergh Experience Tuesday, November 13 7:00 p.m.
Judith Ann Schiff, the Chief Research Archivist at Yale University, will give a talk on the lives of Charles and Anne Lindbergh. For more than a decade until his death in 1974, Schiff worked closely with Connecticut resident Charles Lindbergh as he deposited his papers in the library. After his death she advised Anne Morrow Lindbergh and their daughter Reeve on their publishing projects.

Menunkatuck Audubon presents: Bear Reality Wednesday, November 14 7:30 p.m.
Felicia Ortner, Master Wildlife Conservationist and bear enthusiast, presents her informative program Bear Reality. Black bear sightings have continued to increase in Connecticut since the 1980s when the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection's Wildlife Division first had evidence of a resident bear population.
With the number of bears increasing in the state, it is important for residents to learn the facts about black bears and how to coexist with them. Felicia will dispel some of the myths associated with bears, provide natural history information, and talk about some of the results of the black bear research conducted by wildlife biologists in the state.

Chronic Kidney Disease: Talk by Laura Troidle, P.A. Thursday, November 15 10:00 a.m.
Laura Troidle, PA, of Metabolism Associates in Branford, will speak about Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Learn more about CKD, your stage, how diet affects CKD, what you can do to help your kidneys and what your options are for treatment.
Having CKD means that one's kidneys have been affected by a process that decreases the ability of the kidney to work at its very best. In the United States, the most common processes that affect the kidneys are diabetes and high blood pressure. About one-third of the American adult population has CKD. Learn more at this informative session with Laura. No registration necessary; program is free and open to the public.

The Legacy Theatre is staging the northeast premiere of a one-woman musical about the life of the First Lady to the second President of the United States. "Affectionately, Abigail," written by Nonie N. Sorensen, directed by company member Stephanie Stiefel Williams, and starring Keely Baisden Knudsen, Founder and Artistic Director of the Legacy Theater, focuses on the life of Abigail Adams, wife of John Adams, the second President of the United States. It commemorates a woman whose life was noble amidst great challenges, who inspired her husband at every step, and upheld the values that are at the core of this great nation. Audubon Film: "Green Fire: Aldo Leopold and a Land Ethic for Our Time"

"Green Fire: Aldo Leopold and a Land Ethic for Our Time" is the first feature length documentary film ever made about famed conservationist Aldo Leopold. The film explores Aldo Leopold's life in the early part of the twentieth century and the many ways his land ethic idea continues to be applied all over the world today.
The film shares highlights from Leopold's life and extraordinary career, explaining how he shaped conservation in the twentieth century and still inspires people today. Although probably best known as the author of the conservation classic A Sand County Almanac, Leopold is also renowned for his work as an educator, philosopher, forester, ecologist, and wilderness advocate. The film series is cosponsored by Audubon Connecticut.

Repurposed Book Craft

 Give old, discarded books new life! This Election Day, come in to the Blackstone for some artsy-crafty fun. We'll be making something new and wonderful out of old books!
Children will be able to make mobiles, ornaments and wreaths, or use their imagination to come up with something completely new! All used books, paints, glitter and glue will be provided. And, if you have books or materials you'd like to use, feel free to bring them in!

New Plays at the Blackstone
 Are you an actor or a playwright? Join us for the monthly gathering of New Plays at the Blackstone. Our group has two primary goals: to nurture individual theater artists, and to develop new plays by local writers.These monthly meetings give playwrights the opportunity to hear their works read by local actors.
