Stay Heat Aware

Extreme temperatures can be dangerous for everyone. The risk of heat-related illness involving hyperthermia, such as heat fatigue, heat stroke, heat cramps and heat exhaustion increases with age.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports elderly people (aged 65 years and older) are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses than younger people for several reasons:
  • Elderly people do not adjust as well as young people to sudden changes in temperature.
  • They are more likely to have a chronic medical condition that changes normal body responses to heat.
  • They are more likely to take prescription medicines that impair the body's ability to regulate its temperature or that inhibit perspiration.
Each year hundreds of preventable heat-related deaths occur.  Being aware of the precautionary measures for preventing heat-related illness could save a life.  Click the link to review the CDC's guide on Heat Stress in Older Adults.
