Featured Client: Karla Alba, Senior Property Manager, Avison Young

TLP: How did you get into property management? 

Karla: Like most of my peers in the industry, I sort of landed into property management and eventually fell in love with it.  I thought I was going to have a career in accounting.  My fist desk job was as an accountant for a family-owned property management firm.  After a few years I decided it was time to move on and try my luck at a bigger firm. I got my foot in the door as an assistant property manager, worked really hard and eventually got my first assignment as a property manager of a 250,000 square foot office building in Pasadena. I currently manage a portfolio of properties for Avison Young.

TLP: What do you love most about property management?

Karla: It's the people... being able to help them and seeing their satisfaction when I deliver positive results. Owners and tenants are appreciative when they see that you're doing your best and this is rewarding for me.

TLP: How do you feel about filming at your properties?  

Karla: The right filming project provides added value for an owner and can give prestige to a property. I've managed several properties that have become popular in TV shows and films... LA Law, Fast and Furious, Mission Impossible, NCIS to name a few.  Having celebrities at the shoot builds excitement with the tenants, and the additional revenue pleases the owner. Partnering with a good location agent is key. The best experience I've had is with The Location Portal who I recently worked with on a month-long project that was completed without incident. I received daily updates on the activity, and what was expected the following day. I have worked with several location agents in the past, but The Location Portal has provided unparalleled service and attention to the projects they represent.

TLP: What do you do when you're not working? 

Karla: Outside of my property management world, I am busy being a mom to my two boys, ages 17 and 22. They have kept me busy throughout the years with their school, sports and performing arts schedules. In a year, when my youngest graduates from high school, I hope to catch up on travelling and be able to fulfill my passion of experiencing food from all over the world (#foodieonthego).
